spoiling match results in title

I don’t like that the Rewind article titles are spoiling the results of the matches with things like “Ascent eclipse Velocity.”

Maybe the titles to these articles could be hidden until clicked, with a description like “Froyo vs Se7en” or “Rewind UBF” or something, with an option to turn the spoilers off in user settings. Currently you can unsubscribe to the “News” forum, but the community news tab can’t be hidden, unless I’m missing something. I’m also not sure such a drastic measure is worth pursuing since it means less awareness of community stuff.

Or just forgo spoiler titles entirely, but I feel like that might reduce hype too much, I dunno.

Not everyone can watch matches live factoring in timezones and other responsibilities. Sure, you could say, “avoid TFTV”, but going through an entire lan of footage is a daunting undertaking, and I feel like telling people to NOT bring traffic to your website is the opposite of what website owners want to do.

The biggest TF2 LAN all year and people are angry about match results being pushed on the biggest worldwide platform for comp TF2 when it happens.
???

The only work arounds are to not hawkeye the threads being made about it (you can unsub from news threads but i guess it cant be done ) or to physically be at the LAN

Personally I like having the result in the title for stylistic reasons, but I can see why someone might see the titles and have the results spoiled for them. The recap articles going forward for Rewind II will avoid spoilers in the titles and I'll see if we can reevaluate our policy on titles.

Just keep in mind that if you saw, for example, an article about Se7en vs Ascent in the LBF, and then an article about Se7en vs froyotech in the Grand Finals, it would be pretty clear who won the Se7en vs Ascent game and that would already be a spoiler.

wouldnt hurt to add a [ SPOILER ] at the front of the title or something to hide it imo

This really isn't difficult and I dunno why people over-complicate it:

Does adding the spoilers to the title actually add anything to the overall piece that couldn't be replicated by making it the first sentence of the piece?

If the answer is no (spoilers: it is) then why do it when it clearly only subtracts by annoying people who don't want to be spoiled?

UGC gets this right...like c'mon.

Just put the bracket name and results in the title instead of outright saying which teams have won.

If any writer wants to spoiler-proof their titles but isn't sure how to do it, I'll be happy to help.

SpadesThe only work arounds are to not hawkeye the threads being made about it

Yes, you can avoid the threads, but you can't avoid the titles of the threads. Hence, my complaint.

(you can unsub from news threads but i guess it cant be done )

You can unsubscribe from News, but you'll still see the Community News tab in the top-left. It's also on the home page.

or to physically be at the LAN

If I'm paying loads of money to fly out and hang with my friends in person, and I can only do this a few times a year, I'm not going to spend 10-15+ hours watching other people play TF2 when I could just as easily do that at my own desk.

We want the results--we just want the chance to watch the VOD first.

Spades . . . ( you can unsub from news threads but i guess it cant be done ) or to physically be at the LAN

First option also prevents me from noticing the ~80% of posts that aren't match spoilers. The second option doesn't even contribute to this discussion you are so wonderfully adding to.

bleghfarecPersonally I like having the result in the title for stylistic reasonsArguedOysterIt means I don't have to actually click on the link and start reading to find out who won.
Isn't that what news headlines are for? Glance at it and know what's up and then read the article to find out more? Personally, I like my news giving me spoilers.

There could be an option in settings so everyone is happy.

A much easier way to go about it (without having to code spoiler-hiding) would be to just write a spoiler title and a non-spoiler title for every article and letting people change their preference in options.
