Fair warning, you can't queue solo or duo. It forces you to have a full 3 man team. You need to have 2 friends to play with you.

edit: as in like theres no solo or duo playlist.

When I was playing it straight wouldn't let me and there was an article confirming it. There was a thing where it told me to restart Apex Legends and Origin and seems you can now.

i think he misinterpreted your post as "you HAVE to invite friends you know into your lobby to play" and not "there is no solo player playlist"

regardless, i fucking love this game. ever since H1Z1 had its downfall as a good game, i've been craving a real battle royale game that relies on the skill of the player and this is it. the abilities give characters personality and roles but they don't heavily tip the scales in the favor of one player or another. titanfall's movement is so much fun and the guns handle really well once you get your sens right

I implore everyone reading this thread to really consider that this is a game Published by EA.

This is basically a guarantee that this game is going to be a micro-transaction heavy game where alot of the content is locked by additional paywalls and some of that content WILL give a team an advantage over a team that hasn't paid for it or spend the near eternity to grind for it.

Battlefront 1 &2
It used to take 40 hours of gameplay to unlock Darth Vader OR Luke Skywalker in Battlefront 2.
https://www.vg247.com/2017/11/13/it-takes-40-hours-to-unlock-darth-vader-and-other-heroes-in-star-wars-battlefront-2/

But EA also sold them, along with a slurry of other things that gave a major upper hand to people who paid early on and whenever new content dropped.

Battlefield
Battlefield 1, you want all the possible weapons and attachments to have the best loadout possible? Get short cut kits for only $10 for each infantry class or $30 for all 3 (A $10 SAVINGS!!!) and a $15 vehicle kit short cut OR get all of them for $40 (A $25 SAVINGS!!!) . Also 3 large content updates that cost $15 each some of which contain a really powerful new class and or vehicle that will totally give the other team the upper hand IF YOU DON'T HAVE IT. Oh and don't forget to get the premium pass so you have preference for getting into servers!

BF1 at this point costs about $160 just to have all the "base" content.

BFV is shaping up to be the same way.

Don't get me started about FIFA ultimate teams, the fact there's a competitive league for this and is setup like this blows my fucking mind.

Apex Legends is already proving it's going to follow the EA trend of micro-transactions with hero's that cost ~$7.50 each. Otherwise you're going to have to grind to get it, and better hope the new hero isn't OP at launch if you're not going to pay. This is going to end up worse than Quake Champions on acquiring the new characters...

Tbh worried as fuck due to EA being EA, but that being said I do have some (probably misplaced) faith that respawn can actually pull through all of the EA bullshit and make a proper game rather than a cash grab.

Overall this is probably one of the most polished games to actually release, it feels finished rather than a beta test and that is amazing to me considering today's FPS climate. Obviously there is some balance issues (wingman fucking broken to all hell) but the game not only has a really solid foundation but also a 1 year road map already so this shows that respawn is looking ahead and looking out for the game and community. iMO this could possibly be the fist BR that is actually viable as an esport due to the team play and the base mechanics.

ArticleHennig also wasn’t used to working with a corporation like Electronic Arts. Despite being owned by electronics giant Sony, Naughty Dog had been able to operate autonomously, in large part because they were widely perceived as the corporation’s prestige video game studio. At EA, however, things were different. “She was giving these massive presentations on the story, themes,” said one person who worked on Ragtag. “EA executives are like, ‘FIFA Ultimate Team makes a billion dollars a year.’ Where’s your version of that?

The only thing that is theoretically behind a paywall is new heros. In a game w/ this high of ttk and the gun play the way it is, I don't think any hero could be crazy OP.

- It's a free game
- The hero's that aren't unlocked yet aren't good
- Everything that isn't a hero is a cosmetic

My cynicism may come across as a bit overboard to most, but literally everything that EA has touched in the last few years that's remotely multiplayer focused ends up being a micro-transaction hell. EA deserves every single bit of cynicism that I have and then some.

I really hope this game doesn't go that route, I even have a tweet out that just so happened to basically ask for what Apex Legends is the day it was released (which I didn't know at the time). The only things about this game that scares me is the paid heros and being tied to EA.

Just saying people need to proceed with extreme caution, gambling addiction is real and EA really likes getting people caught into a rng lootbox/cardpack system and will do almost anything to get them started.

I installed the game last night not expecting much, really fun though. high ttk, movement system not the worst. frames not too bad. weapons could use some balancing. ie if i get the scout/basic ar or one of the lmgs I find myself instantly shredding everyone earlygame

Not that EA should be blindly believed in, but they do seem like they've thoroughly learned their lesson. BFV has fine MTX and they backed out of their Battlefront 2 MTX system pretty quick

Titanfall 2's MTX were fine also.

ComangliaBasically devs who don't give EA what they want get shutdown.

It's by design. They aren't buying studios because they like what it's doing and want to see more, they're buying it for some combination of their IP / dev talent / existing fans. And when the fans leave or stop translating to sales (whether it be the studio itself making bad decisions or EA imposing things on them), there's no reason to keep the studio around--they own the IP and the cost of moving a dev is negligible.

But they don't just axe the company immediately; they need time to relocate individual devs without causing a panic. If it was recently acquired, there's probably some stipulation about not closing the studio until a certain amount of time or enough employees quit or some other conditions (afaik and iirc, I can't find any sources on this but I remember hearing this mentioned). And even if they don't have a particular reason to keep them around, it's better PR for EA at large to shutdown companies for "rapid loss of employees" or "underwhelming quality or sales." So projects are started with no expectation of becoming a finished or quality game and receiving continuously less direction from mid-level management, and it'll either be a failure or a flop and they can safely close the studio or it'll exceed expectations and they're getting even more out of it.

From another article about the same Visceral shutdown:

https://www.pcgamer.com/ex-visceral-employee-calls-the-studios-closure-a-mercy-killing/From there, according to the report, it wasn't so much a comedy of errors as a slow, sad decline, driven by indecision, indifference, and nervousness. Visceral was never given the staffing levels it needed to make the game, Hennig struggled without the support network she was accustomed to at Naughty Dog, the Frostbite engine was not suited to the design that had scoped, and EA's expectations were sky-high: One source told the site the publisher was looking for a 90 or higher score on Metacritic, an absolutely astronomical number even under the best of conditions.

And it seems to be working for them, EA at large is doing pretty well for themselves even if not all their studios are. There's obviously a lot more going on behind the scenes (and there's no mention of shareholders or the like in it), but that's the best explanation I've seen for why they'll so consistently close studios, sometimes within a few years of acquiring them, and still pull massive profits.

That was all a bit of a tangent, but it's important to recognize that the studios on EA's chopping block aren't blunders that piss off fans, it's a calculated plan that's gotten them to where they are now.

As for Respawn Entertainment and Apex Legends, I haven't been following either but I don't think it's immediately comparable to the big names in EA. Games like Battlefront, Battlefield, and especially FIFA are very mainstream and casual players were hyped for them, so it was a fairly safe bet to load them up with microtransactions and still sell well (with battlefront 2 getting burned by being so extreme and blatant with it that even people not following it were hearing about it, and now they know the line they can't cross).

Apex Legends isn't in the same position, and everyone knows the game would die if it ever got bad with being significantly pay2win. I'd wager as long as the game is a moderate success, it'd only ever turn into "microtransaction hell" if the playerbase starts leaving and they just want to milk whatever extra from it and be done with it. I'd be skeptical too, both because if it's not a success then they could recoup costs by becoming pay2win, and because for all I know Respawn Entertainment could be on the way out, but it won't be "EA is just being EA again and ruining a good game."

this games movement is kinda weird but its seems ok so far. some of the guns make 0 sense and the TTK is quite long making for minute long fights which i think is a good thing. the skills are really weird to get use to considering its a BR game.
the revive system isn't crazy but it gives an incentive to the person who died to keep watching their teammates and forces people to learn rather than quit out and requeue. good game design.

Got to play for just over an hour yesterday. Game is really good, definitely worth a try even for people who're not fans of battle royale games.

TTK seems to be much higher than alot of other battle royale games. I'm saying "seems" largely because the only weapons that I'm aware of that can 1 hit kill I haven't even seen used. The shotguns have a fairly large spread and the commonly found shotguns do 90-150dmg maximum on headshot (assuming no helmet), you're not likely to see the Fortnite meta of 1-pumping people. All weapons in the game have bullet travel time so the slow firing sniper rifles can be extremely brutal if you miss.

If you play around with your squad it doesn't matter much if you're picked off at range by a sniper as your teammates can revive you fairly quickly and getting to cover even when knocked down is not that bad. It's really hard to eliminate a player that's knocked down (especially if they have a knockdown shield) without knocking down the entire squad unless you use a close range "finisher" move that leaves you really vulnerable for 3-5s.

Oh and there's no fall damage!

Haven't got to play in a setting where everyone is using voice chat yet, but this game really does reward players for sticking together and playing as a team. Definitely the most fun I've had in any BR game.

hip-fire assault rifle = bad, hip-fire smg at medium range = bad, grenade arch is nice, you can see the knockdown shield when I revive a teammate at the end.

Petewait you didn't even dl the game before you typed that massive body of text?

I played the tutorial, if you didn't notice that massive body of text didn't involve the actual raw gameplay what-so-ever.

Just because a game is currently good doesn't mean it can't be ruined. Battlefront 1&2 at a base level were decent games same with FIFA (I've never played FIFA but everything I hear about the actual game itself people seem to enjoy) and both of them could be/could have been significantly better experiences if EA didn't bog them down just to suck every last $ from a player.

I still highly recommend people to just flatout not pay for unlocking characters, it's a feature that shouldn't exist end of story.
