Let's say that I bought packet of small chocolates and I have a group of friends around me. I really want to share my chocolates with my friends, but there aren't enough chocolates in the packet to give one to each person present, myself included. In this situation I could either:

A) Start handing out chocolates to friends one by one, knowing fully that I will eventually run out of chocolates, and some of my friends will be left disappointed or jealous because others got a chocolate and they didn't
B) Don't share my chocolates in order to avoid disappointing everybody, but miss out on the joy of sharing my chocolates

Which of these two is the right decision to make and why? If none of these two are the right decision, what is, and why?

The correct play is to ask if anyone wants chocolate. If if less people say they want some than chocolate that you have, you don't have to worry about disappointing anyone. If more people say they want some than chocolate you have, you give chocolate to the people who spoke up first

asks if anyone wants chocolate. if too many people ask, pull out a knife and cut the chocolate into even pieces for everyone.

Presuming A and B are the only options you can easily do A while not disappointing anyone too much, you just have to set the correct expectation by under promising and over delivering. All you gotta say is "ay mates I dont have enough for everyone but I do have some extra chocolates, would anyone like one?"

if there is a dispute between two or more parties on who gets the chocolate you can settle it by flipping a coin or a friendly game of rock/paper scissors. this method protects your relationships because everyone would have had a roughly equal chance of getting chocolate and, by extension, not feel any resentment at you since they will rationalize it as simply getting RNG'd and not because you were picking favorites.

keep however much chocolate you want to eat to yourself, then throw the packet on a table and tell your friends to take some if they want

look them straight in the eyes, one by one and grab all the chocolates at once and jam them into your mouth while maintaining eye contact with one of your friends without saying a word.
