I've been starting to branch out into observing other games, specifically CSGO, and in the past year HLAE has become very prominent not just for use in frag movie/video making, but also in live productions. When I saw Keylime made a decent guide in this thread on how to use HLAE for TF2 smooths, I got curious as to if this would be something worth doing in TF2 and decided to make a proof of concept showcasing rollouts.
Points to note here are:
- I used rayshud for this just as a proof of concept, the player info part of the HUD will be different HUD to HUD and hiding the HUD during the smooth is also an option
- Because of the nature of HLAE, the
-insecure
launch option is required and therefore these tools are only available in STV, similar to CastingEssentials and other previous custom TF2 observing tools.
- Currently timing this on a keybind at 9:55 round timer at the start of each round, has been pretty consistent going through the rest of the demo and seeing if the timing aligned
- you can pre-select which player POV you want to cut to during the smooth; this can help in situations where casters say "I want to see what X does on this mid", or simply switching immediately to the demos exchanging sticks on mid as is typical 80% of the time
- if the demos roll out significantly faster than their team, the demo fight occurs immediately, or an issue with the smooth arises it can be cancelled and immediately swapped to the currently selected player POV with a simple keybind for
mirv_campath enabled 0
- From what I've been told HLAE causes a memory leak in TF2 due to parts of it built specifically for other games, and can cause instability and crashes. Going to do some stability testing tonight though from what ive been told restarting TF2 after each map yields best results. A solution is being worked on but for now this is the only option available
I'm looking for some basic general feedback. Does this look cool? Would you like to see this in future TFTV casts? Would you like to see smooths used in other situations?

it's really cool! unfortunately hlae can be a bit of a pain but i believe some of the ozfortress people have been using it in production so they may be able to help.

Yes, CappingTV have been using it in the past and we're working with console on developing something.
