International event alternatives

Due to the decreasing chances of any region hosting a TF2 LAN at the moment, has anyone thought of alternative opportunities to run online international events?

I know the 'pro league' idea that floats around is a bit of a joke but I feel like now would be a better time than ever to do something like it. I think it would be cool to see a region based group stage (EU, NA, OCE and SEA have their own group), followed by an international playoffs (obviously some testing would need to be done for ping and stuff). Would be something different than our regular seasonal leagues, could even intergrate the current 6s leagues as a qualifier for it.

What do you guys think? I just want to see something fresh come in to the scene.

It's very impractical. Aside from the astounding ping differences between the regions, the playoff matches would have to be played at very inconvenient times. How do you possibly balance a bo3 between an Australian team and a European team? Either one of the teams will have 300+ ping or both will have 150+ ping, which are both unplayable. How do you schedule matches between a European team and an Australian team, one will either have to play extremely late, or extremely early, or both will have to play at inconvenient times. TF2 is already hard enough as it is to schedule around work and real life stuff, so scheduling intercontinental matches would be a nightmare for everyone involved.

Besides, there not being a TF2 LAN at the moment is not because there is nobody stepping up to the plate, it's because it's not possible to host one now due to the pandemic. When the pandemic is over, I'm certain we will see LANs being organised again.

I just wanted to reiterate this was just an idea and I'd love to hear if others had suggestions!

The playoffs would likely have to play on a weekend to work with everyone's timezones, but this would be no different to if the teams were at LAN.

You're right, it would be hard to compensate the ping but if measurements were done to find the best server at least it would be even. Nations cup is an example of where they've managed to do it.

I agree, I'm not saying there's no one stepping up to the plate, I'm saying that cause of the pandemic we should look at other options while travelling for events aren't on the cards. You've raised some good points but I'd still like to find a way for intercontinental matchups to work in some form!

we could do international online events daily if we wanted, the reason we havent ever is because theyd be SHIT. no point watching a competition where everyone has 100+ ping

At LAN you don't have to wake up in the middle of the night to play. You will most likely have adjusted to the jet lag in the previous days if you come from other continents. Waking up in the middle of the night vs being jetlagged is a big difference.

The ETF2L nation cups are played on European servers at European times, so anyone not from Europe is very disadvantaged. It's a European league, so the nation cups are mainly for European countries. It is not really meant to be an intercontinental competition. North American teams usually get Chicago/East coast players for ETF2L competitions as it's possible to get below 100 ping, which is still playable. Oceanian/East Asian teams have never entered as they would have to wake up in the middle of the night to play a 300 ping official.

I think the "Idea" of a universal TF2 League would be benefical for all parties in theory, more admins, more people, bigger playerbase and - more attractive for sponsors to sponsor a league with 10000 players rather than one league thats restricted to one region with 1000 players, its not a bad idea, obviously you'd need seperate divisions per region but that would still be better than before.

Merging all leagues would also result in a lot of head clashes, I can imagine league fees are going to be a hot topic of discussion, whitelists, maps, formats, theres a lot to get through to make something like that happen, but is it possible? Yeah obviously.

This is both not really what's being discussed here and also poorly thought out in almost every way.
