#3141 PC Build Thread in Hardware

@Setsul
Do you also do laptops? If not, ignore this post, otherwise:

I'm looking to buy a general-purpose laptop for the coming 4+ years. Think video recording and editing, Visual Studio, Photoshop, stuff like that. None of it is for professional purposes, but still I don't want things to be slow.
I intend to use it for gaming also, but I don't need 120hz, nor do I need maxed out graphics. AA for example will always be turned off, and I'm fine with turning down/off fancy shaders. It's unlikely that there will be any game development, so I don't need the beastiest of laptops. I won't be using it for streaming. (Oh, and TF2 does not have any kind of priority.)
Tweakers is supposed to be "the comparison site" in the Netherlands, but it pales in comparison to what countries like Germany and the USA offer. I'm willing to order from Germany since (for example) amazon.de seems to have a good connection to Netherlands in terms of shipping and warranty. (Maybe more sites do?)
For now I have the budget at €2,000, but I'm certainly willing to exceed it if it's worth the money (according to my Demands/Wants lists). Price/quality ratio is more important to me than having a strict budget, as I plan to use it daily for years. I'd rather not cheap out now and regret it later.

Demands:
- No Apple
- 15" at least
- 1920x1080
- Matte screen
- 256 GB SSD
- 1 TB HDD
- 8 GB RAM at least
- Dark exterior (black / grey)
- No "2-in-1" or foldable screens (I don't need/want a tablet)
- 2+ USB ports
- Qwerty
- Trackpad/touchpad

Wants:
- 3+ USB ports.
- Battery life of 4+ hours while/for watching movies (the more the better I suppose).
- Good-looking screen.
- Nice build quality, I'd rather not get issues with the screen's hinges for example.
- Not loud?
- Good wifi? I'll be using the laptop a lot 1 story from where my router is located.
- Ethernet would be a nice bonus.
- No touchscreen (I won't use it, so it would be redundant).
- 60hz would be enough, but more would be fine of course.
- No disc drive, wouldn't use it.

Doesn't matter:
- Weight
- Thickness
- I don't really care for 17", so I'd be happy to go for 15" if that cuts down the price

Hopefully this was clear and complete enough?

#1526 mastercomfig - fps/customization config in Customization

just to throw an opionion into the mix:
i get that/why people would lol at the idea of paying for something as "trivial" as a config for some game, but that's really just because we've been spoiled by those capable and willing, like Chris in the past with the famous chris' config.

it's pretty rare for knowledgeable and clever people like chris, mastercoms and setsul to spend time helping a bunch of average gamers like us (yes), and they will be moving on at some point, and you never know if there'll be a replacement any time soon.

i wouldn't push or even recommend anyone to donate, but don't forget that a lot of time goes into stuff like this, and the majority of gamers are nowhere near capable of producing configs like this.
and let's be real, we've all spent hundreds, if not thousands of hours in tf2 using configs that people like mastercoms have made.

just don't take it for granted, peeps.

as for ways of payment, i've always preferred simple one-shot paypal donations so i can decide what i want to pay/can miss, and later i can always come back and put in extra. i realize that might not be ideal for someone putting in time consistently, but i think it's safe to assume that some might not bother with patreon at all, while they would consider something like paypal. (just a suggestion to have that as an option as well.)

Lol, waiting for your reply cost me a good deal. I hate hardware purchases.

Thanks for the help, I appreciate you taking the time.

#2928 PC Build Thread in Hardware

Thanks again, greatly appreciated. :-)

How about this? ("VGA Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1060 3GB WindForce OC" for €233.)
Sorry to keep asking -- I don't understand why this particular card is so much less expensive than some other 1060 3GB cards. I'd rather double-check, if you don't mind. (Unbelievable how many iterations of each card are made..)

#2926 PC Build Thread in Hardware
SetsulThat means essentially something between GTX 1050 / RX 560 (about the same speed as the GTX 670) and a GTX 1060 3GB / RX 570 (if you can find one for 250€) which would be around 70% faster. Depends on the game though so it's really anything between 50 and 100%. Between that there's also the 1050 Ti.
That should be all your options in terms of new GPUs.

Thanks a lot for the reply. :-)
Any opinion on Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1060 6GB Windforce OC for €295?
The fact that it has 2x DVI is why it caught my eye. (Both monitors I have are DVI.)

@Setsul

Howdy. :-)
I'm looking to get a new GPU. Perhaps you could take a look at my thread over at overclock.net? I would paste it here, but it would spam the thread.
The gist of the situation is that I have an old build from 2012 of which the GPU (GTX670) is damaged.

#13 cool dane video in TF2 General Discussion

cool video, interesting information. could perhaps even be somewhat useful to mappers?

it's really cool to see that a tf2 youtuber got help from veteran mappers to this extend. wrt the ster thread on the tf2 community, this was certainly a project that showed a very good side of it. (i suppose the mapping community is a community on its own, but in the end it's a part of the entire thing.)

hat off to pazer btw, good shit!

#5 mouse on left hand in Off Topic

what do you mean "setups"? all you need is either an ambidextrous mouse or a left-handed one, and then just re-bind your keyboard a bit. (might as well try it out if all you have is a right-handed mouse.)

since you're left-handed, obviously it's worth it to give it a try. though, since your muscle memory is non-existent, you can expect to be terrible in the beginning. (like, really fucking terrible.)

if you decide to try it out, just make two separate bind-configs to easily switch between the two.

#2 Problem with switching team disguise in Q/A Help

i don't see why it would stop disguiseteam from working, but: the bind isn't set up correctly.
-ffw and -reload are never executed, so once you press r, you are basically forever reloading, and are also stuck in +ffw.
so just like (i assume you've done with) +ffw, you'll have to turn this into a "press and release" bind.

#19 Dan Schneider Leaves Nickelodeon in World Events

if you read the rumors about him, i don't think his foot fetish is the problem. rumors of child rape have been floating around for years, and many of the rumors suggest that staff and even parents knew, but money/power wins in the end. a bunch of the celebrity whistle blowers have already said that what has come out so far is just the tip of the iceberg.

#10 Fortnite now mobile in Off Topic

the idea of playing shooters like this on a tiny fucking display, especially without mouse/keyboard, is just ridiculous to me.
i suppose it just means i'm old, but i love having a huge screen in my face for proper immersion, and a mouse to aim accurately with. this phone-era of video games is such a bummer.

as for fortnite, it's definitely top-tier if you look at how terrible the majority of mobile games are. you mostly see immensely addictive games that use 0/10 of your attention and brain, while typically using somewhere between 4/10 and 10/10 of your wallet. fortnite is at least an actual game, rather than slot machine tier garbage.

#2 cl_crosshair_file "" in .cfg file? in Customization

i think the workaround was making a cfg file with the line cl_crosshair_file "" in it, and then execing the file in your bind/alias
