#45 Growing the tf2 community in TF2 General Discussion

I think that one way to spread the word about esea is to have more esea players *actively* looking for newer players to guide. For example, go to the truetf2 subreddit or the UGC forums and answer questions. When you play MM, watch for people who have questions and concerns about the format, tell them that comp players are talking about the same things and looking for solutions here on tftv.

Also, I wanna write an esea/open FAQ since the site itself is so lacking in that area, at least as far as TF2 is concerned. If you remember things that confused you when you were first getting started, PM me to make sure they're included. I'll definitely be covering at least the following: how much it actually costs to play a season in total, where you go to pay, how to cancel recurring payments on paypal, how match scheduling works, and how to watch matches.

flufI have heard more people say UGC plantium is the highest level of tf2 more than I've heard ESEA invite
Some people just don't know ESEA is a thing

Hahaha it's so true. I was playing matchmaking yesterday, and we ran into this group of tagged up new players several times. We'd beaten them every time, and they were like, "Omg what div are u." We said open and IM, but they stalked Percy's profile, saw that she was rostered as a plat sniper, and said, "HOLY SHIT UR IN PLAT WOW."

I remember being totally new in UGC and thinking that "invite" was somehow related to when a UGC roster said "invited" between seasons. -__-

#4 Demo Support tool (valve prec) in Customization

I think people will probably want a log of killstreak ticks like p-rec can make.

First of all, ifly for constantly keeping your stuff updated. It's awesome to be able to rely on that! :D

Second, it looks like you forgot to put a Resume button on the escape menu. Not sure if that was intentional since you can accomplish the same thing with another escape.

#10 How to be more vocal while playing? in Q/A Help

Something that helped me was attempting to play dm classes, especially pocket, in pugs/lobbies. It helped me to really understand how hard it is to do anything when your med isn't giving you enough information. After going through the experience of having to ask, "Where are you?" or "What's our percent?" constantly and like... not always being told that there's something on them or that they're leaving me in the fight, I never wanted to put my own players through it lol. It put it more at the front of my mind and helped me understand when certain comms are the most useful and needed.

Also, if you consciously practice it for a while, it'll get to the point where a lot of it is automatic, like... you always call your position after you died and are coming back to your team, without even thinking about it. I have to suppress those habits now when I'm playing classes where it isn't as relevant haha.

#101 TF2 Blog: "The Meet Your Match Update is Coming" in TF2 General Discussion

Wait wait wait, so does the new casual quickplay thing mean that valve pubs as we know them will cease to exist, or they just won't be the default option? I love pubs... ;__;

#155 How did you get your alias in TF2 General Discussion
saamcookiejakesince i told everyone that my real name was jake because it was what i was used to being called for so long.i've never felt like more of an asshole than when i showed up at your dorm room for gxl and said i was there to pick up jake and your roomate was like "no one here is named jake"

Mildly related story: my real name is very difficult for some people to remember/pronounce, but I've never had a persistent nickname irl. So, sometimes if I meet someone I'll never really see again, like some randomer at a party, I'll just tell them to call me Differ cause it's simple, and I'll actually know to respond to it. BUT this one time, I ended up running into a person again, and I didn't really remember them, and they called me Differ. It was so weeird.

DifferI'm a math major, and when school started to actually get enjoyable for me, it was under the guidance of a wonderful calculus prof who'd become a mentor of mine. When I was in calc 2, I was also in a field research class and realized that a problem we were having with developing an experiment could basically be solved with an optimization problem, only with multiple independent variables. This is a calc 4 concept, but my mentor helped me get started on learning it on my own and showed a lot of faith in my ability. It was really empowering, so the gradient vector and calculus in general hold a really special place in my heart.

Hence, Differ ∇ = Differ-Del = just a vague nod to calculus and particularly, the gradient vector. :)

did u just say math is empowering

It wasn't the math that was empowering. It was feeling like I was good at something, getting the motivation/tools to independently learn shit that interested me, and having a professor I respected really believe in me.
