Let her know as soon as you can, don't take too long to tell her or she'll assume you just want to be friends. So you can go with this other friend, but you have to let him know that he's the wingman. You're trying to get with this girl, so he can't be overly friendly or cut you out of the conversation etc. And this all comes from personal experience. If you take too long to ask her, it'll just end up hurting more in long run if you get let down.
