friend asked me to play in 2009ish but this is the first video i saw, so i thought it was some bot-coding gmod nerd shit. really regret not playing with him then, but i may not have stuck around as long as i did if i started that early
2011 i got my first real computer because i was going through some medical problems, so gaming seemed like a good thing to do (was cruising on windows 2000 handmedowns til that point). tf2 was a pretty reasonable option, and one of several games i tried out around that time.
joined an empty upward server and pushed the cart to the end; i was very confused. looking back, i'm really glad i clicked "blu" because i may have just uninstalled if i clicked red. i was basically new to gaming as a whole at that time. after that, played 100 hours of dustbowl soldier after that before doing anything else.
late 2012 one of my friends from a really small non-tf2 streaming community (most folks played/streamed nintendo games) and i both pubbed a lot, so we made a ugc team, knowing nothing about the game. got stomped and he stopped playing, but i met some more folks, started pugging, found newbie mixes/esea, and bingo bango bongo literal years of my life down the drain (and i wouldnt have it any other way)
ty for coming to my ted talk
all of our legacies are the hundreds of thousands of collective hours we've poured into this stupid fucking game
there is nothing to be remembered for except the fun along the way, friend
FactsMachineKevin and other Newbie Mix contributors.
emphasis added for visual representation of importance on who gets the work done for newbie mixes
ty to the following folks that have carried lower level NA tf2 on their backs for forever:
- Rogue for hosting weekly mixes nearly every week for the past ~3 years
- Grumpy/Mallory/Tony for doing the past few team drives
- Tino for being the discord server czar to help with outreach, even though we both hate discord
- Trobort, yari, hugh hubris, and others that help out with stuff here and there
- sker and squidamatron for running the tech side of things (including our shiny new servers)
- airr, antecedenct, arcadia, arryu, asterisk, bilbert, cap_creature, dubthink, enthrow, flaaaaaaaaaaff, fleskore, graham, jaguar, laxson, lites, magma, negasora, neto, obmd, perfection, pont, raiderraven, rasta ronald, rave, rkcbb, sagejay, somefatpoptart, squidamatron, the realweiner, virgil, and yerb for being semi-regular/ regular coaches
- all of our patrons (not going to list because i dont have explicit permission, but you are all appreciated)
- all the admins that set us up for success before i arrived to the team (alosec, dr.shdwpuppet, and pie_hero come to mind immediately)
go tf2!
if you want to help out, we always need weekly coaches. hmu kevinispwn#1337 :)
zx37KevinIsPwnpeople just don't because it's boring as hell and the stakes are so lowalso something i've always thought—people play this game for fun, so why ruin your opponents fun + your own just to win an excruciating $20 or something
this was my biggest problem when coaching an amateur team a few seasons back. because low teams just sit there and do NOTHING for FOREVER, i just told them to start pushing out of gullywash last off tiny advantages (1 player, slight uber, etc.) even if it was gonna be like 20% success rate. fuck waiting 8 minutes for something to happen
but yeah i don't think it's as much a problem main+ currently, though there are def outliers.
RahmedIs 5cp still flawed as it was back then 5 years ago?
imo not really
RahmedHow come we don't experiment with attack/defence anymore?
stopwatch is super fun but makes a game more chance-oriented imo. one lucky situation can snowball into a whole half win rather than a couple cps or, at best, a round
RahmedWhat other flaws exist currently in today's meta and do you have any solutions to them?
i think the biggest thing rn to worry about is teams that are really good and really slow. that sideshow vid was made when se7en was dominant (i think), and that's probably what he's talking about. the 6s format can be abused. most people just don't because it's boring as hell and the stakes are so low
5unnyAbout three weeks ago the DSA steamrolled establishment democrats in Nevada for state party leadership positions. Not much, but it is worth noting.
my understanding may not be full
but they're just caucusing, right? not starting a new party from scratch? democratic socialists is not a party but an organization.
they took over the leadership roles of one of the two major parties and will actually have a chance at accomplishing their goals. cool stuff regardless
if any third party every manages to do something remotely meaningful (other than sway some states' presidential election votes to less representative outcomes), i will happily start paying attention to them
but given how the green party is seemingly made up of TERFs/ ppl afraid of wifi and the libertarian party is primarily made up of fucking idiots, i don't have any meaningful reason to care about their existence. other parties are even less important here in america
plunkwho would win? mastercomms who has opened the video game up and optimised it or aimisadick who has contributed nothing to note
friendly reminder to anyone in this thread that mastercomms has spend a shitload of time pushing fps configs pretty much as far as we can reasonably expect and that there is a place to donate for that work here
AimIsADickDon't derivative metrics measure different stuff?
no.
miles/hour communicates the same thing as hours/mile. there is no functional or mathematic difference. even if hours/mile were better at communicating the measurement linguistically (there's a decent argument there), there's no functional benefit warranting the switch to an entirely new system.
i have no idea if a frametime of __ ms is good or bad, but i immediately understand what __ fps visually is. that is the crux of what everyone in this thread is trying to tell you
AimIsADickThing is that frame rate would be extremely misleading here, since the variance is practically invisible in frame rate. The frame rate would only match up the total amounts if all of the frames rendered in the same amount of time, which isn't always the case. I'd feels like I'm just repeating my self here tho…
fps changes every frame. it's not actually measuring the past second.
it is much easier for us to think in terms of fps because it operates on a much easier scale for folks to understand (generally 30-300 except in extremes) as opposed to spf which is weird (.3-.03 i think lol?)
it's like how we measure car speed in miles/hour, but it's not actually the amount of distance we've traveled in the past hour. just the amount we would travel if we were to continue at that exact speed the next hour
AimIsADick(It feels like we're getting nowhere with this conversation…)
I promise you that isn't mastercomm's fault.
Tery_I'll make two other sheets for all RGL seasons and then all time. But that'll be for another day.
cant wait to lose my bench spot
kirisamenewbie mixes EU when please lole
It's hard to keep mixes going, and NA mixes only work due to a few people doing huge amounts of thankless work for extended periods of time (i did it when i was in high school from like '13-'14, others have stepped up since). EU so far hasn't found anyone that is able to do it consistently.
I am happy to help anyone willing to organize weekly EU newbie mixes. Anyone w reasonable rep is welcomed to hmu, and I will get game/mumble servers set up for you for free
frootcan i change teams to K
we have the most fun bench tbh
can we uhhhhhh make this tourney happen? rofl
