It's required to see your friends online in order to unlock the 3rd pokemon in the Safari.
Someone already said this in the thread but I can't be bothered to look for it.
E: Can someone tell me which pokemon are in my safari?

Not quite, both of you being online together unlocks hidden abilities and shows the avatar, the 3rd pokemon slot is unlocked by beating the elite four, as far as I know.

Try the GTS and a ditto for ditto trade, usually a Japanese ditto up there for grabs, if you are masuda methoding that is.

Post game Sycamore gives you a pass to go to Kiloude city, there is a building here called the friend safari. For each friend on your friendslist, you gain access to a little grass zone with 3 pokemon of a certain type, like fairy/dragon etc. Generally the pokemon here are uncommon and can possess hidden abilities not obtainable through normal grass. Also wild starter pokemon.

Just thought i'd make a thread for all you to share and swap friend codes, each friend you have unlocks a random safari zone with 3 pokemon of a particular type. Certain starters/dream world abilities can be obtained here. I'll start off with mine

*edit: If you weren't aware, you have to both add, and be added by the other person for this to actually work.
*edit 2: Just a reminder: Please make sure to connect online INGAME.
Others don't unlock your 3rd slot until you beat the game, so be a good person and beat vid gaem.
