i have some good news
I think the comp tf2 community could have done a lot more to get the game growing but we as a whole have had shitty discipline so instead of making choices for the long term we chose short term decisions that kept the game stagnant. If (when?) the game becomes completely dead it is going to be our fault, not valve's.

I've really enjoyed playing with trip as he stepped in for us. He's able to give good feedback to others while also taking it himself even though we are much less experienced than he is.
