i don't bash hl, people can play whatever they want just not my cup of tea
harbleui'd bring up the same comparison to medic in 6v6. everyone thinks they can play the class and that it doesn't take any skill while in reality there are only 3-4 players who are truly good at the class. yes you can play it and be semi-effective but there is still a much higher skill ceiling that is attainable. its hard to explain the things that make a top medic different than just any random high level one, but its normally those situations where the player makes you just go "wow" after pulling something off. its the same with engie/heavy in HL. there are very few actual good ones, and to most people they wouldn't really notice the difference between watching them play. but playing on a team with a high level heavy compared to a new/decent one (looking at you panic) its night and day.
fucked up posting like three times, dont judge me
the skill ceiling of heavy and engie can only be so high, and at least in my opinion if your making the comparison to the skill ceiling of a medic in 6s, its laughable. Like you said, there are only a few 6s medics who essentially have mastered the class but, I bet if you were to take any half competent 6s player and put them in a role of engie it wouldn't even take half the time it does to master the class compared to medic.
And if you can actually show me a clip of a engie or heavy making a play that will make me say "wow" i'll give you a hat
i just dont understand how someone can be satisfied in any game where they are rewarded for getting kills from any type of turret/auto aiming/firing weapon lol. At that point it feels like your just playing the game for the sake of playing and not to have fun with it.
Also, what I've always wondered is what is the difference in skill level between someone who plays engie in steel versus someone whos on a top platinum team? I guess same goes for heavy too
Basically, highlander brings out alot of the things that irritate me about this game

potIdk what uni you go to scuba but all my profs at UofT are super nice and helpful. If you don't understand something during the lecture, you can put your hand up and the prof will pause his lecture for you and take your question. They stick around after class until all questions are answered and they have office hours every week for extra help. TAs have also been super nice to us and behave similarly to the profs. They also have office hours where you can get extra help.
There are some things that you just can't learn by yourself and 90% of the time profs/teachers are willing to help. You just have to have the balls to ask them.
well at YorkU its different since lectures can go over 1000 people and i agree you can't learn alone all the time im just saying if you have a shitty proff you gotta be independent and take it upon yourself to learn whether it be studying alone/with a friend or a TA. And some of the proffs here will literally listen to your question turn around and completely ignore it, seen it happen on multiple occasions lol
potScubaSquidlearn to not rely on teachers/professors because alot of them are bad teachers who are just working to get paid. just make sure you pretty much read the entire textbook or atleast the parts that the course covers and you should be good if you do the examples as well. These are all terrible ideas.
really? cause once your get to college/university good luck with having someone walk you through the course. the proffs are there making money and continuing their research in their fields, most of them could give less of af about the students, and if you go to a school with a pretty decently big size campus like mine, youll be taking a lecture with 200+ other people they arent going to help everyone individually. learning to be independent in your studies and being able to focus and not only read but understand the text is vital to getting a good grade. I'm not saying don't ask from help from other classmates/your teacher or proff/or even tutors, im just saying dont rely on anyone else to help you achieve the grade you need, its all on on you son

Honestly this may seem very simple and insignificant but, my main calling improved alot when i learned to repetitively hit tab, keep an eye on the kill feed and my teams health levels as much as possible, while keeping spam and watching chokes closely. Being able to determine your teams position, numbers, health and ammo relative to the amount of damage being put out on the other team, their positon/health/ammo can keep you in a strong position to maintain control of situations that require quick action. Alot of it also just came from making alot of mistakes and finding out what works and what doesn't in various situations and being able to take what you learned from those mistakes and correcting your calls so that the same mistakes aren't constantly apparent (alot of this is from just playing the game and trying out various things).
You also need to rely on your team as much as they rely on your calls to follow those calls whether or not they think its the correct thing to do at the moment. there is a huge difference between constructive criticism and counter calling. If you have a problem with some of the things your maincaller is doing, it is helpful for both your team and your main caller that after matches/scrims you speak up and discuss what you think went wrong/right and what could have done differenty. As a maincaller your never 100% right (at least not in my case) but, you learn and improve through experience to the point where your mistakes become minimal and you have a strong sense of what is going on in the game. But, if your in the middle of a scrim/match and your main caller is calling the plays, that is not the time to try and argue on what you think is right or wrong in that situation, but to follow through with the strategy even if it means dieing. Like I said, after matches/scrims is the time for discussing various mistakes made.
Last thing I find essential about being a main caller is keeping a cool head and being calm in tense and irritable situations, where others may get angry and hot headed, being calm and collected will not only keep your team focused and not fighting with each other but, it will greatly help you make better calls because there isn't a cluster of nonsensical banter between players in the mumble which can get crowded af if people are yelling at each other and arguing. Everyone gets frustrated sometimes, but like I said during games is not the appropriate time to be yelling at each other. Wait till after the match and go ahead and tear each others heads off but, do it in another channel cause atleast I find it's really annoying hearing two of your teammates talking shit nonstop to each other lol.
My bad if anyone already stated some of this, just my 2 cents and what i've learned
I've maincalled as pocket and demo and can honestly say it was one of the most worthwhile things to learn to do in this game properly.
bumppp
