Another +1 for Ibanez SR series basses. They're ridiculously light (~2.5kg at most), the necks are super comfortable, and the newer bridges make re-stringing very easy. The only drawback would be color selection, since Ibanez likes to pick and choose which model lines get specific colors (Like surreal burst being available on the SR655 but not the SR650, RIP).
The GSR200 is an entry level bass, but it may be a good jumping off point if you decide to check out the SR line.

lighthousewow what a coincidence this thread was bumped the day i got accepted to join a band! :D
thinking of buying a new bass since im going to be playing gigs and recording now. anyone got any suggestions? (the band is a power metal band but i also like basically any other kind of metal/rock)
The Ibanez SR series basses are some pretty nice instruments.
I would look at the SR650; it has a nice thin neck, P/J pickup configuration, 3-band eq, and an eq toggle switch if you want to rock the pickups in passive mode.
G&L makes some affordable J bass and P bass style basses.
Otherwise, Fender Jazz basses are pretty much the gold standard, and well worth the ~$600US investment for a Mexican made model.
In the end, it boils down to what feels best for you. Try out as many basses as you can, and try to buy used whenever possible.

got a fender j-bass as an early bday/christmas present a few weeks ago so that i can learn to play, i took guitar lessons when i was like 6 but i dont remember anything

Don't fret, Fenders and Squiers don't have any tilt on the headstock, so you're not hurting it at all. Just don't step on it.
