#247 GXL LAN Fall 2014 in News
CJ-ColemanAny news on rental PC's?TheFragile just answered this (again) two days ago:

"PCs for players who are unable to bring their own is something we are still waiting for a response on. This question is asked quite frequently. Please be patient and I should have answers hopefully soon."

lol, I had someone ask me this last night.

Please, everyone, I urge you to take 5 minutes of reading through this thread on a potential question you have. I am asked the same questions almost every day, and a lot of the same questions get asked on each page.

I don't have any fancy insider information about the rental PC situation. I'm not keeping anything from anyone. I am entirely waiting on the word from CEVO / the place they are renting PCs from. I'm hoping I'll have an answer soon, but I have no idea when that will be. The moment I get an idea of what the situation will be like, I will make certain that everyone here will know immediately. What I can tell you is that everyone will have ample time to react to the answer, regardless of what the outcome is.

Speaking of rental PCs, I also want to make it very clear that if you can bring your PC, please do. I would imagine that there would be a very limited supply of rental PCs available if everything works out. For the sake of the tournament not going through long delays, please bring your PC if you can.

#7 What are the subtle things top level players do? in TF2 General Discussion
d4m0So sure in theory it sounds great to say that good players push without uber but maybe it's only because they don't really need that great of an advantage?

Non-uber vs non-uber pushes can be a great surprise if the opposing team isn't ready for it. It can also make a lot of sense in certain situations. For example, let's say the red team has mid on badlands, and the blue team is defending close at choke.

The red team have 5 players on mid and 1 player in the house.
The blue team have 4 players at choke and 2 players watching the valley flank near the resupply door.

In a non-uber vs non-uber situation, if red were to overwhelm the choke while the house guy were to push house out to patio, it would be 6vs4. Obviously, a 6vs4 fight would be great here for red, and it would take the 2 blue guys in valley about 4-6 seconds to get there in time to help. If red can get kills quickly enough before the 2 blue guys arrive from valley, it should be a winning fight for them.

But like all strategies, it requires good execution. I think that's mostly the difference between higher teams and lower teams. The lower teams lack execution, as well as not realizing their mistakes.

You can still register.

PCs for players who are unable to bring their own is something we are still waiting for a response on. This question is asked quite frequently. Please be patient and I should have answers hopefully soon.

#7 what is edgebug? in TF2 General Discussion
fiftytwoHellbentWhen you land on the last ~4 units of a platform or displacement and you bounce off the end of it without taking fall damage.
Bounce is a really bad term IMO. The unique thing about the edge bug is that it stops all vertical momentum. It doesn't reverse it, it just stops it, but you keep all horizontal momentum.

Bounce makes me think of the overbounce glitch in Quake 3.

Pretty hilarious that a lot of people think that this is fake.

Also pretty hilarious that the teammate said "Yeah, I'll call the police as soon as the game's over." eSports.

#12 invite team strategy and cohesion during season in TF2 General Discussion
Platinumwe saw you guys wreck col on granary at lan and we came up with the counter strat while taking a piss before the match. We figured that if we stuffed your garage rollout we'd be good, it just worked waaay better than was expected. Probably because tyler is shit

Yeah, we didn't adjust and just kept going garage for some reason. Also, Tyler is indeed shit.

#9 invite team strategy and cohesion during season in TF2 General Discussion
a) Discuss mids/maps and how you want to play them?

At first, we kinda just freestyle mids and see what works and what we are comfortable with. We adjust as needed and try to find a few good working strategies. A common misconception is that invite teams have ridiculously complex strats, but that's not really true all of the time. It's just that invite teams are much better at executing all strats than lesser-skilled teams, no matter how basic the strat is.

b) Talk about your playstyle and how you want to refine it as the season goes on?

This is only necessary when someone doesn't do enough of what they should be doing to help the team. Like if a roamer isn't bombing enough, or if people die at times where deaths aren't necessary.

c) Do your teams actually go over demos of yourself (or your team)/other teams to refine your style and how you react to other teams?

It's never a bad idea to do this, but I think any team I've been on would do it if we were trying to figure out what's wrong with our mids.

I mean in the past, I even remember hearing about teams during the EG times were actually going over demos in their hotel room just so they could win that season (s9?), is this still the case?

Eh, it depends. It definitely helped blight-own during s6 finals against my team, because they watched our granary demos and countered our mids incredibly (and granary is more dependent on mids than any map). We got rolled in like 10 minutes, and we were very strong on granary, too. If they didn't study our stuff, it surely would have been much closer. Aside from that, some teams still might do things similar, but it's not ridiculously common as you'd think.
