re: giving items to dogmeat, I don't have a companion but I feel like it would be insanely annoying to (again) remember which items are theirs, take all, give their shit back to them, etc. with dogmeat it's just dog armor but even that I feel like is pretty silly

it can be annoying, from what i could tell when a companion equipped any apparel it would remove it from their inventory, at least thats how it worked with the 1 i travel with. I would give them a set of cage armor to wear and then it'd replace their default outfit in the inventory and disappear.

i pretty much use companions as a mule, what they do in combat/their equipment doesn't really matter to me anymore, they're just noise for me to carry more shit with. but i also pretty obsessively clear every area out of all the items i can find. travel back and forth when i get full and store all the shit i found to sell it at a later date

??? I was asking where people put their crops.

i thought you were asking about an optimal spot to put crops, not for where looks good. at the edge of sanctuary, theres a giant tree that you can't scrap, then theres the two houses that are ruined you can scrap, behind one of those houses is a little area flat fenced in w/ a doghouse and food bowl in it. if you scrap the dog house it'll probably fit in and look like a garden.

glssettlers definitely do some stuff on their own, I had a bunch of crops set up for one of the settlements, I set up the bell, 0 settlers, came back to add more shit and one guy was already farmin away the tatos

when you came back, did the food actually count in your overlay? from what i've done they are basically retarded robots.

kirbyYo, so where did everyone put their farm in Sanctuary??? The best place would be where the house you scrap is to the side of the house with the workstations, but you can't scrap the foundation or the dead bushes. I ended up just putting it behind the house and reconstructing the fence, but it feels like a pretty shit spot.

the spot doesn't matter, settlers will work it no matter where it is, the only reason you'd want to put it somewhere accessible is so you don't lose your settlers to re-assign them to stuff later on, but anywhere will provide food for your settlement

AvastI've noticed some settlers automatically like pick crops and stuff but you for sure have to assign them to guard posts, and some settlers won't pick crops even if they could.

Do only like the starting settlers in a town automatically do stuff? Do you have to manually assign everyone else to harvest/defend/work trading posts?

you need to assign people to work food, defense, and the trading posts. settlers shouldn't pick crops unless you tell them, if they do that isn't working as intended. the only thing unassigned settlers do is "scavenge" which means they'll put shit they find into your workshop storage. if you haven't checked, you can look in the aid section and you probably have a lot of purified water sitting in there.

edit: i don't know what exactly they find or how much of it, but i know they put water in there sometimes.

AvastI haven't actually experimented with the bell or siren, do you have to man the siren for it to work or can a settler use it?

the bell is just a utility for the player to use, settlers won't touch it.

the siren is meant to alert settlers to danger, so if theres a raid you can ring the siren, and if you're in a big place like sanctuary they'll all come out of whatever place they're hanging out in and help defend. i don't think a settler can man it, i don't think they use it themselves, however you can set up a laser tripwire to activate the siren if you really want to. i'm not sure how much it would help, as far as defending against raids goes, cause the settlers are fairly useless combat wise.

it is worth noting that if you have enough defense raiders will ignore your settlement

glsstuff

you can build a bell in the resources misc section that, when rung, will force all settlers to gather round the bell. this is different from the siren, which is supposed to alarm them to danger.

a good way to help with inventory management is to give dogmeat only weapons, because weapons tend to way a lot compared to most junk/armor. since dogmeat doesn't equip any weapons, you can just use the weapons tab and take everything without having to read.

grape mentats are your friend, if you're using charisma armor to get better prices.

you can also rename the pieces of armor you wear from "pocketed leather arm" to anything you want, take it to an armor bench and press T on it. then it'll be marked out for you.

boulder it just sounded like the pilot didn't even care that the plane was gonna crash. He just said as normally as possible, 0 inflection, "we're gonna crash." Or something like that.

if you actually listen to pilots in crash situations, they're incredibly calm from what i've listened to. i'm assuming you're talking about the
