GetawhaleSeriously though, how does everything break every time there's a new sale? Are they not expecting a huge influx of traffic? Can they not prepare for it somehow by now? I'll admit I'm clueless and would love someone to tell me how reasonable it is.
It's not cost effective to pay for the processing power (or whatever the bottleneck is in this case, bandwidth maybe) to support a server load that only ever occurs 0.2% of the time. Server "power" is usually designed to handle an average or expected number of requests, not a maximum.
I'm not an expert in infrastructure, so wouldn't know if they could necessarily offset that "power" with temporary servers, but even if they could, I doubt they lose any money at all as a result of the down time they experience.

MR_SLINQpingu programmed the original pug.na IRC bot. He now goes as kixelated and is 5k MMR in DOTA 2. He's known for taking down the beyond the summit stream by accident (look it up on reddit).
pingu was a cool dude. haven't talked to him in a while. I hope he didn't remove me...
