something that popped into my head
if valve says they don't want to take a venture in this game without knowing it will make them a profit, they're being two faced as hell
think of all the dumb experimentation they've done to this game, all the questionable shit that's been thrown in and has failed or flourished. they've made additions not knowing how they'd be received before, why not now?

IIRC the real man in charge now is Eric Smith
Regardless of what hes doing now, he is still the father of the entire Team Fortress franchise.
He did, but he's not going to be the one implementing all these changes unless he switches back to the tf2 team. Admittedly I have absolutely no idea what power he holds over the development of this game now, but I estimate that it isn't as much as it used to be.
