MarxistAlthough I'm under the impression that a large amount of the current ESEA-playing community will still be in ESEA come s16, if CEVO can manage a proper start date, it may prove to be a wonderful test-pilot of the league. I say that because sign ups for ESEA s16 probably wont be until some time in mid-late January (not 100% on when LAN is). So, that gives plenty of time for CEVO to get its self in gear and have some matches get played - since currently all it is, is a league with very few actual matches played, 6 servers, and history with the community, some of which I'm personally still a bit salty about lol.
I'm no champion defender of ESEA, but I imagine once all is said and done, the community will ultimately benefit from having more leagues for mid and higher players with ESEA still being populated. I honestly don't get that much of a feeling, from most of the folks I've talked to that're playing in Main and Invite, that they intend to leave ESEA any time soon. I'd also be willing to bet that if ESEA's numbers are significantly down come s16 they may offer incentives to return.
As far as in game items Plat, valve seems to be completely unwilling to provide medals or in-game items to any for-profit league. So that leaves UGC if you just want in-game swag lol. There are 6s medals now and might I say they look pretty cool imho.
CAN YDSC GET POST-HOC MEDALS
Open players right now pay 8 dollars in league fees plus 21 dollars in premium. 30 dollars per person for the league or a flat 180 per team shouldn't be outrageous.
i personally see anticheats like antiviruses almost because they operate with similar goals, to stop the bad guy. the bad guy is always going to be a little ahead because by their very nature, anticheats/antiviruses are reactive and need to be able to pick up on what the bad guy is doing. while open sourcing the anticheat will allow the cheat makers to look at what the ac is trying to do to detect it, even if the anticheat was not closed source, the cheat makers will manage to make it so that it's undetectable until someone gets the anticheat team a copy of the cheat so they can look at what exactly it does to try and defeat it. an open source anticheat can work as long as the team working on it is diligent and uses good methods to detect things that cheats commonly do etc instead of just reacting to each cheat as it comes out. just like how clamav is a perfectly fine open source antivirus.
PlatinumWould you leave your girlfriend if she put a camera in your room? If you left her without a decent prospect, you may feel morally sound, but you're not getting laid for a long time.
holy shit yes i would even if i knew i wouldn't get laid for a year after
radiumbreloomradium I wonder if CEVO is willing to create/sponsor an invitation-only LAN.yo. the whole point of CEVO is that it's LAN free.
The spectacle of LAN has driven a lot of new blood into Open over the last few seasons. I think that you NEED a LAN for that reason alone. It's literally our Super Bowl from an exposure/marketing standpoint. I think that the migration would have happened already if CEVO were to say "we're running a league funded LAN event".
How the LAN participants are FUNDED needs to be addressed, but I think the that idea of a LAN championship is quite an honorable one.
Has it though? The most recent esea lan was absolutely atrocious to watch. I'd attribute the new open players to the work that pet/giffy started that vickm and noona have continued in the newbie mixes finally paying dividends in the new players reaching a skill level that makes them comfortable paying to play.
EDIT: Also, half the spectacle of lan is the sheer amount of matches packed within a 2 day window that could easily be replicated online.

yo. the whole point of CEVO is that it's LAN free.
platinum and other invite players shouldn't have to be the ones to put effort into helping anything get off the ground unless they want to... all any new league structure really needs from them is a commitment that they will play in their league and take it seriously for the first season or two where the only prizes will be from league fees or other minimal sources (community funding, possibly one or two private sponsors) before it gets off the ground and can try to get real sponsors.
etf2l rules have worked for them for years. i'd give it a try before saying that our system is inherently better in every way
even without getting donations, esea lan is still subsidized via the premium and league fees of everyone in open, im, and main.
rr- if there wasnt a lan, im positive a good amount of the top of invite would quit or just switch classes and play with their friends in open, im, etc.
LET THEM QUIT. THE COMMUNITY SHOULD STOP SUBSIDIZING (through donations, league fees, and premium) 12-24 PLAYERS GETTING A TRIP TO GO HANG OUT WITH THEIR FRIENDS.
viscamusi don't think there's any way to convince invite players to play without lan
If people are going to quit because there is no more lan, the let them go do something else with their lives. 95% of competitive tf2 players shouldn't be held hostage to a shitty league because 12-24 people need a trip to dallas every 15 weeks.
MR_SLINTwo of your favorite TF2 quotes are things that you yourself said?
heh
