If you already have your caption files, it's just a matter of installing them. A HUD and captions are independent of each other so you use any combination.
For any interested parties, I'm the one who created the Steam Guide.
As well as the project on Google Code.
Basically, the captions show up any time a certain sound is "heard" by the player. Even if it is far away, as long as you can hear it, you'll get a caption for it.
However, it's pretty limited as you can only apply captions to voice lines. Effectively no sound effects, so no cloak/decloak/DR/whatever.
In addition, captions can't tell the difference between a "faked" Uber and a real uber, so there's that.
