MR_SLINsaamThere is absolutely no proof Valve cares about what we think.I see where you're at with this but I'd like to counter with the following:
- A team of competitive TF2 players went to Valve's headquarters and confirmed Valve is creating a 6v6 matchmaking system.
- They created that system and then asked competitive players to join as part of a beta test.
- They then launched the system and have continued to make changes that are in line with competitive play.
I'm not going to say that they care about what we think, since they might have done all of that stuff on their own without us, but I mean... absolutely no proof? Come on now. I know everyone didn't meet the developers and it's sort of your word versus ours but... no proof at all?
There's also plenty of anecdotal evidence of competitive players talking directly to Valve developers so I feel like a lot of you guys are exaggerating. They've even posted directly on these exact forums.
Did they make it because a group of 6v6 players went or did they make it because every game has matchmaking and it's the thing to do now? Also don't forget they said they wanted to put in game lobbies in the game three years before it came out so it's not like they worked all that fast.
They may have asked competitive players to join but they did fuck all with the feedback they got. Seriously since release look at what valve has changed about meet your match, they took out snakewater and added badwater ffs.
Again, I haven't seen anything from valve since closed beta to suggest they have any idea what they're doing, and I'll say it again that if Valve wants us to tank a season to get feedback then they should tell us directly.
Hippfire hype!
riotbzwhy is blaze so cheap
roamers generally get bad points
saamit's an IM team
where's bone
GentlemanJonKonceptit shouldn't have to take someone traveling to valve HQ to become informed that the tf2 team is listening and reading comments/suggestionsIt shouldn't but it does so if you want to know that's what you gotta do. Ymmv
I wouldn't want or be expected to be trusted with that. The point is that communicating secondhand leaves far too much for interpretation.
Shounicthere is no concrete proof, but there is secondary / circumstantial proof.
1. valve reads tftv (among others, like /r/tf2)
proof: jill posted in the forums once (whether this is enough is not part of the discussion)
proof: b4nny and slin (& i think sigafoo too) confirms this is a reality when they went to visit valve headquarters.
There is absolutely no proof Valve cares about what we think. The people who have talked to Valve are insanely optimistic about this game and thinking that b4nny or slin would have made some insane leap in logic from what they were told to what they heard isn't a stretch to me at all. If Valve wants us to ruin our scene so they can rebalance weapons and support the game then they need to fucking come out and say it. This reading between the lines bullshit is just stupid.
Shounic2. b4nny has had influence in valve's balancing
proof: he has said that he had been asked to submit ideas for weapon changes and etc. he also had an anecdote about preventing the reserve shooter from being buffed.
2a: whether you think b4nny is the right person doesn't matter, he is a point of "data from comp" used to make changes.
Until I hear ANYTHING from Valve I consider this a moot point. b4nny is not a reliable contact with valve.
saamAdditionally, we just played a whole season with dumb unlocks, and in the month and a half long offseason not a single weapon was changed.
Shounic1. this is not wrong, but why is this right? valve didn't promise when they update things. b4nny has seemingly supported the idea that they like to release their weapon balances and changes in major updates instead, so with the pyro update supposedly on the horizon, doesn't reason favor that they are waiting to ship all their changes then instead of now?
Pyro update was announced nearly 6 months ago. The only thing that tells me is how incompetent Valve is considering Hardass Johnny basically made a really solid pyro update himself using sourcemod commands
Shounic2. regardless of whether point 1 was right or wrong, we also know that the TF2 team isn't very big. Therefore the pace of their work will be somewhat slow. so is it not possible that valve is just slow, rather than they are ignoring us?
Is it too much to ask for any form of communication before we make drastic changes to a format people have enjoyed for almost a decade?
Shounici'm curious what your opinion on competitive being in the game means, because if they don't care what exactly was the reason they put it in then?
MM was the bare minimum amount of effort they could have possibly put in. They had a 6 month beta with feedback from a ton of invite players. They used all that feedback to put swiftwater in. Since then they've taken out Snakewater and put Swiftwater in. Nothing about their laughably poor development of MM shows they are willing to listen to the comp community; it really shows the opposite.
Marxist Just because the quick-fix is available and even if it is nerfed, it doesn't add anything of value to our game, in fact, even if it were some non-reality where the quick-fix wasn't a big deal, I would still argue against its inclusion because our game fundamentally revolves around uber and kritz (with kritz being decidedly less useful than it was due to arrow building already and the demo nerf).
The arguments I've heard for unbanning unlocks are
- Valve will use the data to balance weapons
- It opens up new ways to play the game
- It makes the transition between Matchmaking and comp 6s less jarring
I think all of those arguments are fundamentally flawed. For one, the last rebalancing happened in the Meet your Match update. There is no proof valve used any data from comp to make these changes. Additionally, we just played a whole season with dumb unlocks, and in the month and a half long offseason not a single weapon was changed. All the data was have points to Valve not caring what we do so catering to them and making the game worse (read: less enjoyable, this is a provable fact) is just naively optimistic.
Two, it doesn't really open up new ways to play the game, it just makes existing ways more powerful. Being able to shoot thru people and bodyshot for more damage doesn't make you play sniper in a new way, you still scope in and shoot. Having a minigun with more range or a slow effect doesn't change how you play heavy it just makes it better. I for one don't want to play comp TF2 if we're working it towards heavy, engie, and pyro are played more in their current state, they are easier classes and there is no way around that.
Three, no one is playing comp MM anyways, it was a massive failure as well as more proof that valve either has not clue what they are doing or are stubborn to the point of idiocy (or both).
I did bring all of these points up in the meeting but I was mostly brushed off ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
it's an IM team
i appreciate your commitment to this shitpost
