I had a problem similar to this and I fixed it by buying a huge ethernet cable. Home Depot has some that are 100 ft long for around 25$. Their site also lists 500 and 1,000 ft cables. The reason for your ping spikes could be your router has too many obstructions in its way (most likely), or your ISP is just bad. You should also call your ISP and see whats up. Either way wireless net is not as good as wired.
