#9 Natural Selection 2 in Other Games

My tribes friends and I went to NS2 after T:A got the shaft from Hi-Rez. One of us had ~124 hours before calling it quits (I had 66). It was fun for a while but 60+% alien win rate was dumb and the gameplay became not interesting very quickly. The community is either incredibly cool and friendly or completely retarded and anal-retentive about every last team detail from game to game.

I remember watching that one comp tournament that was played with the shazbots. God that was awful - I though yukon last stalemates were bad but competitive play brought rapid win or painfully slow loss to a whole other level.

#50 New Map Weekends water-testing in TF2 General Discussion

So these were pretty successful. We tested a nice handful of maps, praised jesus, took shits mid-pug, ran 3 snipers on badwater, and bigdicked points. I think we had fun (at least I hope we did - that game on badwater_a1 was 'Nam flashback-tier).

Now for the problems:
1. The skill level problem from days of old came up again. The group is mostly open/ugc players, and it's still a pug environment. Some strategies couldn't be exploited to their full potential. The quality of map advice would most likely be very different if the skill base was a little more balanced. I do understand that having high-skill players being forced to play with lower-skill players isn't exactly fun, though, and some people just don't give a single shit about map testing.

2. It was a one-man show. We ended up having enough people to run 2 pugs on the same map, but there really wasn't a second party there from the start to coordinate a second group. I also got really tired towards the end, see point 3.

3. Holy fuck my dorm room is like Auschwitz. It's so fucking hot. They won't turn off the heat because the RA's don't know how to without calling maintenance and that takes a while for some ungodly reason.

4. There were a surprising amount of people and I only have a 14-slot server. Like I said, we had enough to run two PUGs at one point. It was sort of difficult because it wasn't easy for captains to pick people because there were more people in mumble than in the server. Setting up an IRC channel for NMW for picking players was suggested, but I'm still having trouble setting up the server I've got here, god knows what I'd mess up trying to get an IRC going. The problem with having a small server wouldn't have been a problem a few weeks ago, but now I'm here at my Uni and I have no job. I still have to pay off the last of my bill with whatever money is sent to me and I need to have SOME sort of reserve for myself for emergency purposes. Upgrading to a 24 slot server or 2 14-slot servers and keeping mumble up would in the end be really costly because I'd be hemorrhaging money without getting any to replace it.

5. Streaming. I'm a really shitty caster. Not that anyone would watch my stream in the first place because a) no one knows who I am, b) those who do know me either don't care or they're already playing, and c) I'm not listed, but it seems like a necessity in this day and age to have a stream. My stream quality is decent enough but I'm not particularly entertaining or good at being informative.

The point of this is that I'm asking for a little help and brainstorming. If anyone has any suggestions for alleviating if not straight out fixing these problems except problem 3 (the hall council has to fix that one), I'm open to hearing them.

TaggerungI don't understand why its so popular
I was reading the manga before it became and anime and it drags for so many chapters, something interesting happens about once every 4 issues. Its a pretty average manga/anime

It's basically the newest Sword Art Online - average generic characters built around tropes put on a "fight for x group's survival" storyline directed by M. Night Shamalan.

Part Deux:

Tonight's maps (not in any particular order outside of Sunshine)

Repeat of cp_sunshine_a3
cp_harbour_a16
cp_badwater_a1
cp_derecho_b4
Possible repeat of koth_coalplant or koth_canopy_b3a

I know you IM/Invite guys would rather sit on the sidelines and laugh about the fact that open players are giving map makers advice, but Phi and company would appreciate some feedback from higher-ups (saw B4nny's post about Sunshine and I agreed with a lot of the changes he suggested).

Harbour can be downloaded here (http://teamfortress.tv/forum/thread/6042-cp-harbour-5cp if the word link breaks).

9:30 EST, same time and place (tribespug.murmur.nfoservers.com port 14790, 74.91.126.205:27015 password mapsarecool). STV is open for 10 people (IP is the same, port should be 27020/27021).

ckapWhile yes, the input from players with more experience is going to be generally more valuable and meaningful, that doesn't mean we should automatically throw out ideas from players with less experience.

Let's say we're building a hospital. We've got a whole bunch of architects and contractors and whoever else specializes in building things getting together and putting their years of experience together to make this hospital. A highschooler who wants to be an architect when he grows up shows up and tries to contribute his take on why the team should totally throw away their plans for the hospital and build it using HIS plans that he sketched up in his free time.

Explain why you think this group of professionals should throw away all of their time and experience to listen to the ill-informed, inexperienced, and far-fetched plans of a highschool student. If you can't, you've found out why conductor is correct.

SnookiIs it ok if I'm not very good?

There aren't any particular skill requirements outside of knowing how to jump and shoot the mans (basically if you can play in open or whatever the highest rank in UGC is for 6s and hold your own don't worry about anything)

MangachuCould you play coalplant second? i'm at work atm and know a few things that should be fixed and/or removed.

That's easily done. We'll just hold it off until you're free.

NoonaIs there any possibility that the date of these will change?

The future of the PUGs remains to be seen. Hopefully there's still enough interest in this to justify keeping it going.

9:30 EST.

Team selection will be volunteer captains picking 5 others as is tradition. I'll try my best to stream it and have an entertaining stream but I'm not the best when it comes to judging teams: http://www.twitch.tv/gr8stalin

PhiAnd if you get bored of those maps or want to test another there's cp_derecho and cp_sunshine to test as well, those are in b4 and a3 respectively right now.

Always good to have more maps to add to the pool. One of the issues we ran into towards the end (in relativity to my time with NMW) was that we just simply started to run out of maps, and it wasn't easy to get people to play the same map over & over again.

b4nnySounds good, I will try to contribute. Just make sure you have the most recent versions of all the maps, as it looks like you don't have the latest warmerfront (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/24793114/cp_warmerfront_test_b7.bsp). Not sure about the versions of the other maps though.

Just grabbed test_b7 now, I'm gonna throw that and Phi's other two maps up on the FTP and run a double-check while that's doin' it's thang.

#1 New Map Weekends water-testing in TF2 General Discussion

I posted earlier about it, and the weekend is almost here. I'm gonna host a NMW revival PUG tonight (length tbd) to see if it's worth investing time in.

I have the following maps uploaded to my server:

koth_coalplant_a6
cp_warmerfront_test_b4
cp_badwater_a1
koth_canopy_b3a
cp_highlands_a4
cp_edifice_test2

Best way I can think of to narrow it down would be a popular vote for those who do show up although coalplant is going to be one that people are going to want to romp around on for sure. It'll be the old Friday/Saturday hosting, around 9:30pm EST for both days (if enough show up for two). I haven't been able to get the STV auto-record working because it's been a while since I've dealt with a Source server, but I'll try to get it up and running, similarly with a black/whitelist. Hopefully the skill disparity isn't as big of a problem as it used to be. I'm gonna give streaming it a shot since I've only got a 15-slot server (compared to the 24-slot server that we had back in the day thanks to Waxpax).

Rules are simple: Have fun, don't be a dick. Class limits are standard, offclassing and experimenting is expected of you.

The old group is still up so I don't see a reason to waste a perfectly good and functioning group: http://steamcommunity.com/groups/newmapweekends

My mumble is attached to the steam group, as well as the server connect string. Server is located in Dallas, Texas right now.

You can contact me if you have any questions, concerns, or just want to say hi. Here's hoping all goes well.
