There was some discussion in the benchmark thread (you'll have to look back). Memory speed/timings usually matter in CPU bound scenarios and TF2 is heavily CPU bound.
Just tested @DDR4-3000 (15-15-15-35)
2639 frames 9.887 seconds 266.91 fps ( 3.75 ms/f) 19.510 fps variability
6.61% increase (16.56 frame difference)
I've got an 8600K (Stock Settings and no MCE/GameBoost/etc enabled)
I forgot to turn on XMP so my RAM is DDR4-2133 (timings are 15-15-15-36)
video card: 1050 ti 4gb with the newest drivers (388.31)
dx81 (custom config, no shadows)
based on the four-year old benchmark demo from the benchmark thread (no other applications open)
2639 frames 10.541 seconds 250.35 fps ( 3.99 ms/f) 19.375 fps variability
what I'm seeing is that you don't even need to overclock an 8600k (cpu or ram) to get great perf in TF2. Let your PC run cool and draw less power. Faster RAM with good timings supposedly does make a difference though. I'll turn on XMP and test at DDR4-3000 (15-15-15-36) some other time
