#734 flatHUD in Customization

I'm guessing there's a fix for this and I just don't know it, or maybe it's just a rare issue, but my contract drawer and a bunch of other things just have filler text. Here's a pic. My friend is having the same issue with rayshud and neither of us are seeing people bring it up so it's probably something on our part?

#11 turntable advice? in Hardware

I recommend the Pro-Ject Debut III if you just wanna buy new and keep it simple. Its only drawback is the minimalist design which some people find a little annoying because it lacks certain features that most turntables have, namely a switch to change rpm automatically rather than doing so manually. But the actual quality of the thing is tremendous for the price, if you're willing to up your budget to 300.

You'd be hard pressed to get a better modern tt for that price; however if you're patient and willing to do some research then I'd recommend buying used. It's sort of like building your own computer rather than buying prebuilt; more work, better bang for your buck.

#55 What are your old cringy videos? in TF2 General Discussion

Fuck me. I legitimately chronicled every single phase of my TF2 "career" in youtube videos.

As a primer, my first video was some video of a dude doing a Deckard Cain impression circa WAR! update. I actually still have this guy added. Cool dude.

First, the first of a two parter of me playing a random pub "well". Circa 6 months after I started playing. Complete with DemoUI.

I went up to step up from pubs with this video of me playing my first "pug". Except it was a lobby. I remember wanting to be carnage, and distinctly remember myself expecting to do better and make a meatshot frag video out of this. Bonus from this era, my "ironic" pub frag video which is a 10 minute long version of the "100% skilled airshot" meme.

Then I started maining spy. I made about 6-7 pub spy frag videos and posted them to GameFAQs. After the TF2 replay thing came out I literally made dozens of clips of killstreaks and sick frags while I was playing spy. Bonus from this era: The only vid I made of comp spy gameplay.

After I became too cool to main spy, I started maining soldier and was a 2cool4u comp player who typed in all lowercase letters and ironically spammed binds. After a brief stint of mid level HL soldier (which I, of course, also made some vids of) I stopped playing comp tf2.

I haven't uploaded anything TF2 related in about 2 years. It's for the best as I'll probably come to regret it anyway. Thanks for coming along on this ride.

#31 A talk about lobby seriousness in TF2 General Discussion

to be honest this was a shit thread to begin with. its heart is in the right place, and i agree with the sentiment, but when one of your two solutions is "tf2c isn't serious enough and here is my solution: start playing more seriously, please!" then maybe the thread isn't worth making. cook up some actual solutions or at least open it up for discussion (e.g. "What can be done about players who don't try in lobbies and make comp tf2 seem like a joke?")

but it was made even worse by the personal attacks against smobo being followed up with accusations of him derailing the topic. newsflash, he only posted 3 times. meanwhile, there are a total of 16 posts (more than half of the ones in the topic so far) that are doing nothing but unnecessary shitposting. it's not like gargle shutting him down right off the bat and the swarm of -frags was enough to move on with the discussion; a bunch of other people had to pile on and further derail the topic. and i can't forget to mention the dude who's on a fuckin' competitive video gaming forum and is shitting on smobo for playing tf2 too much; like really man? lmao

i'm not even trying to defend smobo through and through because his initial post wasn't entirely necessary imo, but don't sit here and condemn him of not contributing to the topic when most people itt did nothing but drop a single post shitting on smobo then peacing out. yeah, we get it guys, tftv hates ugc and its admins. half of a topic of shitposting about it isn't called for.

also the aliases gargle has used are genuinely not okay, esp since he's sitting here asking what can be done for people to take tf2c more seriously. don't even pretend that's worth defending.

#75 Is in-game shit talk a good or a bad thing? in Off Topic

IMO:

Times when it's okay to shittalk:
1) High stakes matches, especially LANs; winning is important, and if getting under your opponents' skin helps you win, then do it. It also makes the match more fun to watch for spectators.
2) When you know a good player on the other team has a short fuse and it would be beneficial to your team to exploit it. Same reasoning as above.
3) When your shittalk is actually clever and isn't just shitty binds or casual usage of racist/homophobic slurs.
4) When you're just playfully doing it with friends and everybody's cool with it (this is a given, I think).
5) Any combination of the above.

Times when it's stupid to shittalk:
1) When there's no actual incentive to beyond just being toxic [e.g. when you're rolling 4-0 and want to brag, or when you target a player who hasn't even said a peep over the course of the entire game for no particular reason].
2) When your idea of shittalk is "ironically" spamming shitty binds or casual usage of racist/homophobic slurs.
3) When the stakes are virtually non existent (looking at you, people who throw shade in lobbies and pugs). When people throw shade in low stakes situations I just get the feeling that they shittalk out of habit, and it's a shitty habit to form.
4) When you're losing. Don't be a sore loser.
5) Any combination of the above.

That's about all there is to it for me. Shit talking is acceptable in plenty of situations but I see so many people shit talk for no reason except to be assholes, and they're often really fucking lazy about it and not even mildly clever. That stuff is toxic as fuck, no matter how hard you try to spin it as you playing "mind games".

#6 last.fm in Off Topic
kevyeah new website is ass but im still only using last fm for scrobbles and nothing else

yeah but they shipped it w/o even that shit working right. can't delete, can't love, and a lot of people have had their deleted scrobbles come back out of nowhere.

i'm not even that upset about the layout itself (except for the homepage which is dogshit), i just wanna know why they forced an update even tho half of the features are currently missing. yeah, they'll probably all come back eventually, but wasn't that what beta.last.fm was for? gauging interest and letting people have a taste of the new site while they work on all of the features to make sure everything is functioning by the time they force everyone to use it? christ dude. it's like if youtube updating their site layout and just temporarily removed the ability to like or comment on videos.

also they use "song - artist" and it's like holy shit why.

#62 rick and morty in Off Topic
kirbyI've never watched Rick & Morty and have absolutely zero idea what it's about. I used to be entirely into mid 00s [AS] with Sealab 2021, ATHF, Harvey Birdman, Brak Show and basically everything else. Will R&M be for me?

I watched all of those growing up and while I wouldn't consider its humor or aesthetic very similar to those (except maybe ATHF), I think you should check this show out anyway. At least check out the pilot even though it's nowhere near the peaks this show has reached so far. It'll still give you a good taste of what the characters are like and the setting and whatnot which should be enough to decide if you wanna keep watching or not.

#42 TF2Stadium.com in Projects
buddhapesteveryone's excited about the *look* of it?

and apparently i missed something, but why the sudden hate against tf2c? do we really want to fragment the already small lobby community?

I have to agree with this, sadly. This website looks gorgeous and was apparently developed incredibly quickly, but TF2C is the standard at the moment and the vast majority of its userbase are either ignorant or ambivalent to the drama surrounding its founder and some of its admins. People need to be given a real reason to use this website over TF2C, and even then, it'll be a very slow and painful process to make this the new standard so long as TF2C is still up and running.

Trust me, I wanna see the pervasiveness of TF2C circumvented as much as anyone else -- well, perhaps less than those who worked on this website (major props on the speedy and passionate response to creating an alternative to that website and the shitheels behind it) -- but this just seems like an alternative to TF2C for those who are upset by the drama which is a very small portion of lobbygoers. I don't want to see this website fail, but as #32 said, this website needs a little more footing to excite and reel in the TF2C users who don't know or care about the drama.

e: I mean, when all you can do to try convincing someone that TF2C shouldn't be used is link them a shitload of drama to read and catch up on, as #41 did, you should reconsider your angle. That alone won't make this website the new standard for lobbies, if that's what it's trying to do. If all it wants to be is an alternative for people in the know who don't want to support TF2C, then power to you. I'm happy to use it no matter what once it takes off.

#5 How do you manage time in Off Topic
WisdomTreeBut university is lot more of demanding and a lot more goes into it, you're unlikely to do good just by gaming after coming back from class...

Seems like you answered your own question here.

You're totally right in that you can't just leave class, head home, and start gaming. The best thing to do is work first, play later. If that means homework, then your goal should be fairly concrete. Determine how many days you have to do the assignments you have at a given point and allot yourself the time to do that much work before you even think about coming home to your computer. Make sure you give yourself more than enough time to make those deadlines. You want to avoid stuff like pulling all nighters, or leaving mumble as soon as a scrim ends to hurry and make a 12 A.M. cutoff. It's not worth the stress and you're better off getting it done during the day. Also, try to stay on campus and work independent of your home/dorm room/whatever as much as humanly possible. The temptation to fuck around on your computer is difficult to fight if you're anything like me. It takes a lot of willpower to stare down a gaming rig when you have homework to do and NOT boot up anything that'll take your mind off of your responsibilities.

As for studying, it's a little more complicated. As a freshman, it may take you a bit to determine if your starting classes are actually difficult enough to study intensively for. I'd be lying to you if I said that I have had to study to get good grades in certain classes; some really are just so easy or have such a lax rubric that you can get a good grade without setting time aside to study. So just get a feel for your classes; don't get overconfident but don't overload yourself with two hour long study sessions in classes you may not actually need to study intensively for.

And as a side note, try to leave time for social stuff as well. It's difficult to maintain balance between work, social stuff, games, and sleep, but it is possible. I suggest looking around for at least one club that seems cool. Depending on the size of your campus, there could be some really niche stuff. One of my friends has a club entirely dedicated to just playing Smash 4 and nothing else.

#1079 Do you like the song above? in Music, Movies, TV

not really what i expected. i'm pretty ignorant about metal and its subgenres but i guess i was under the impression that doom metal had a more foreboding vibe to it but this was a pretty relaxed song. nice moderate, steady tempo, sparse harmonies. pretty good, but i think it was paced a little slow for my taste; maybe i'm just not in the mood for slow stuff right now.

i'm gonna drop my current flavor of the month jam, soon to be swapped with who-knows-what

The sound of the spider things from Risk of Rain being shot. I forget where I initially found the sound file but I just converted it to wav for my own use. I figured no one would want it so I didn't upload to tf2dingalings so sorry for the silly link.

#29 tf2utorial how to get a 20 kill streak as scout in Videos
Mighty???
scout is probably the best class for pubstomping that isn't pyro.
even though I have under 30 hours on scout, I can easily get 25 killstreaks in pubs.

the two classes directly countered by sentries, of which there are always at least two, are the best for pubstomping, gotcha

#617 flatHUD in Customization
flatlineI don't see the bug in either of these - the killfeed is supposed to be right-justified and the targetID looks like you have floating HP on. (put this in your autoexec tf_hud_target_id_disable_floating_health 1 to fix it)

Oh, no kidding. My bad, I thought I saw truktruk streaming with your hud and the killfeed was centered. My mistake then, sorry. Thanks for the autoexec fix, that's got the ids looking like how I want them to look. I didn't even realize the floating health thing was on or what that meant so that'll help for future reference.

flatlineThe Gun Mettle Update thing being off-center is a thing that happens in 16:10 and I don't know why seeing as I used c-vals for it.

Gotcha. It's no biggie, I was just wondering if there was a simple fix.

Thanks for the quick response, sorry that pretty much the whole post was non-issues. I love the hud and I can't wait for the update.
