Another huge thing is confidence, you've got to be confident in the ability of your teammates as well as yourself to be able to play at a higher level. Like, you need to be able to trust your teammates to do their part, and you've got to play to the best level you can.

Different genres, I'd make sure he likes turn based games first. He could be playing AoE2 because it's familiar to him and relaxing.

If you want to be high open you're going to need to put in more effort than that.

Waldo's pretty interesting. He's been on and off on my team for about two seasons. Strong points are good aim, and prediction. His biggest problem is when he goes on tilt he shuts down in mumble. Starts going for dumb shit. I'd recommend him to an IM team that is very communicative, he'll need to play with guys that comm a lot to be able to progress. He has got the skill to play in that area, just needs to find a bunch of guys who can tolerate him.
