#2603 PC Build Thread in Hardware
SetsulThere's no 4TB Seagate Barracuda so the options are:
3TB Toshiba, most likely P300/DT01ACA, same speed and cheaper than the 3TB Barracuda
4TB Seagate IronWolf NAS, more expensive and actually slightly slower (lower power consumption for NAS and so on).
4TB Toshiba, most likely P300/MD04ACA, which does produce interesting noise (think 90s HDD) when doing random reads/writes. Cheaper and faster than the IronWolf NAS though. If you're fine with the noise there are also 5 and 6TB versions. At 6TB there's also the HGST Deskstar NAS, slightly more expensive and slower than the Toshiba, but quiet..

What about this one? https://www.amazon.com/Seagate-BarraCuda-3-5-Inch-Internal-ST4000DM006/dp/B01MSW4MNS

#2590 PC Build Thread in Hardware

Hey Setsul, about the CPU: The price on ARLT has risen from 300 to 320 and it seems to be the only vendor that even promises to have these in store by the end of the month. I've read reports about the supply choking in europe until 2018. Should I maybe swoop in for the 320 before it gets even more expensive if I don't want to risk having to wait several months? We'd like to build the PC this month or early next month, so if this is the only batch coming to german in the near future, my friend would go for the 320. Do you think this is the case?

First of all, thanks for the time!
Later this month should be no problem. If CFL only supports 300 chipsets, I don't think it would make much sense to go with a 7600 and cheaper mobo, since he'd have to replace the mobo next upgrade anyway. He might do some foto and video editing here and there, so I don't think the 6 cores would be completely wasted.

Build looks good. It says that MSRP for the 8600k is 220€, you think it will get there within the next few weeks?
If it goes that low, I believe he'd want to go with the K to be able to OC it at some point. I guess if we need to shave a couple euros, 3TB HDD should also be fine. If it ends up somewhere around or below 1500, it should be all good!

Yeah, Geizhals, my bad. He mostly plays CS competitively, but that's mostly because he's on a laptop and cannot run any new games. I think he likes to try out most new games, would probably be playing PUBG, Dishonored 2 and Ark out of the current games. I assume that if he does get a 1440 or even 4k monitor, he won't be CPU bottlenecked on any of these games even with an nvidia 1080, so I can't think of a reason why he'd want to overclock. Probably pointless unless you know a case where it would be really beneficial.

When is he going to build?
Overclocking yes/no?
MSI - X370 is not a mobo. That's a manufacturer and a chipset. Also why would you order from newegg with a budget in €?
Don't need a 600W PSU, just a good PSU.
There's not much point in 8 cores / 16 threads for gaming. New 4c/4t i3s should be much cheaper and faster, 6c/6t i5 at most.
XFire/SLI used to be ok-ish and will never be good again. SFR is way too much work, AFR is basically a gimmick but still wasted effort because why even bother when you can force your customers to buy a new faster GPU? Old used GPUs being added later doesn't make them any money and people buying two GPUs instead of one that's more than twice as expensive isn't good for them either. For those that would've bought 4 600$ GPUs for 4-way SLI you just support 2-way SLI on the high end GPUs and disable it for all others and make the fastest GPU a 1200$ Titan. More profit, less effort.

Looking to build ASAP, unless something is about to come out that would make a big difference. OCing yeah I guess he wouldn't mind if necessary for some games.

I meant any one of the MSI - X370s because I remember that they make good mobos. I don't know which model would be best, but I was looking at the various reduced offers around 100-120€ on newegg. I figured if they have a lot of stuff reduced, it's probably worth 20€ shipping, will check Amazon and Geizkragen as well to get the best deal of cours (do you recommend any different site?) Anyway, I was considering a bigger mobo for potential SLI needs, but if it's shit anyway I guess it would be a waste. Mobo recommendations?

So, would you recommend the new i3 or i5 instead? If the i5 offers noticeably improved browsing/mass pdf opening/whatever else one might be doing performance, I think that would be preferable. K line or not? Does overclocking the cpu even make any sense at all nowadays (he doesn't play tf2)?

#3 SPOOKY: How does the router know my name? in Q/A Help

Whoever set up your network, whether you, roommates or a technician named it that. It's just the name of the network, nothing to worry about. What you should be worrying about is that ur network has no security. This means anyone can access your network, leech on your download, monitor your traffic and mess with it if they want. I recommend that you turn on WPA.

Paging Setsul.

Building a PC for a friend, not sure about the parts because I'm not up to date with Ryzen. In fact, I don't really know if it's good for gaming at all. 1000-1500€, gaming build. Currently, he's on 1080p but probably looking to upgrade either to high res IPS or 144 1080p (not in budget), so should be able to run everything current and near future at 1440p 60 / 1080 120 at least (4k unlikely but possible). Probably upgrading again when VR gets big so it doesn't need to be completely VR proof yet, but probably a good mobo makes sense, if xfire/sli ever gets good in the future.

I'm thinking something like 7700K or Ryzen 7 1700 if Ryzen is good, 3rd party GTX 1080, MSI - X370 (currently cheap on newegg), 16GB of some DDR4, some 256 SSD, some 5TB HDD, some 600 Watt PSU, good air cooler and case.

If this is reasonable, pls help with the details, I haven't built a PC in years and don't know what's good in terms of RAM, Mobos etc.

If not, pls destroy my build and give a better one, thAnkSMr Setsul!

DanceNumbermanskirtulmyxxuntil i can get iMessage on android i'm not switching. Why is this such a big deal to people
People who use iOS typically know lots of others who use iOS. iMessage is enabled by default and it because a huge hassle to communicate with someone who doesn't have iMessage on anymore. Sure you could use whatsapp, or hangouts, or allo or something like that, but good luck getting the probably hundreds of people you know who use imessage to switch.

#6 has anyone used a music streaming service? in Off Topic

I use tidal family sharing with friends so that I can have a hifi account for 6€ instead of 30. The stupid software only let's you download on mobile and then it's in weird split and encrypted files. However, you could easily pirate them on the PC client by recording them with audacity if you wanted. But then you could also pirate the music in the first place.

rowrowwhat sucks about the whole "esports at olympics" thing is that it's really hard to define a well-rounded video game that includes coordination, skill > luck, and viewer-ability for the masses while also being popular in its own right
