if it shows up on my transcript, i'm going to make sure to get a good grade. nah, it's a public school, but i care about grades, and my parents will kill me if i dont do well.

Oh well it's a pretty silly assignment anyways. I'm surprised you actually get a quantitative grade based on the height. Considering the goal is for you to brainstorm and think outside the box, the student with the tallest tower didn't necessarily learn the most. He probably just researched what the best design was.
I understand what you're saying. However, grades are too important to not to outside research- note that I came up with a design at first, then asked people what they would do.

Their idea is actually pretty similar to what I've been doing. The 3-part base is a good idea, i'll probably change mine to be more similar to what they did.
I can use any other objects to do whatever i want to the paper/tape, but the actual tower can only be tape and paper

in an elective in hs, about engineering, our first assignment was this: create a tower out of 1 sheet of paper (11x8.5) and 6 inches of tape (i may be mistaken, it might be 12 inches).
each inch the tower comes off the ground=1 point. the assignment is out of 100 points, so ideally i'd get something between 8 and 9 feet tall.
Any ideas as to how to do this? you can deduce a certain amount about what the tower will look like based on what a perfect score would be. you'd need 9 separate cuts of the paper length-wise. What I will do, so far, is cut larger pieces at first for the base, then progressively smaller, and then i'd roll them into circles. this works, although i dont think i'll get a decent height without it leaning over.
so yeah, any ideas?

from a practical point of view, is it worth doing i52? there was a small increase in viewership for the grand finals (5.5K->6.3K at peak afaik). besides the entertainment we get from watching the tournament, which is valid reasoning, is it actually worth it?
