Looks like this year's summer event is not going to happen at the end of August like usual, they sent out this email about an hour ago:

As valued members of our LAN Party community, we want you to be the first to know about the upcoming Insomnia the Gaming Festival #i71 dates!

LAN Party
7th - 10th September 2023

LAN Plus, Premium & VIP access
Wednesday 6th September

LAN Standard access
Thursday 7th September

LAN Party closes
Sunday 10th September

Didn't state a reason why.

Such a bad decision on so many levels it makes me fascinated to know why.

I literally start back at college the same week it starts. That’s like the worst timing ever for it lmao, I hope this gets changed back but I doubt it, which is a shame since the previous date was perfect in that sense.

SamusDidn't state a reason why.

The 'why' is due to another show (a car event!) at the NEC that must have beat Player1 Events in booking the August bank holiday weekend.

for those who dont know, a lot of top players/teams wanted to boycott insomnia this year anyway because it sucks. This news definitely makes that more likely and probably even means some of the people who still wanted to go now can't. Real shame because as wan said its our only guaranteed lan this year. Hopefully we can get something for summer but it doesn't look good rn

I paid around 1k for the venue "bar"(table) to not have enough alcohol stocked and sell me sewage water as beer for cutthroat prices

It costs more for brits to play at insomnia with their own PC than to literally fly to other countries and rent (even more rough for continental euros/NAs who have to rent here). the location and organisation is worse than other lans, the stage last year was a shitshow. Insomnia only has hype because of its history and it's the only tournament name thats recognisable to a casual tf2 player who barely cares about the scene but it's by far the worst event to actually attend. Personally i was hoping copenhagen would permanently replace it as the premier eu lan this year but RIP to that dream

Does anyone know the main issues with doing another LAN at Rcadia? I understand that costs for everything have gone up, but they could quite easily increase the prices of tickets/rentals by quite a margin while remaining signifigantly cheaper than i-series

afaik rcadia started doing major restructuring internally pretty much right after we were there in november and wont be doing more events for the forseeable future (at least november)

ah, that's unfortunate, I hope that the great folks involved in organising the november lan are keeping a relationship open with the venue

the only LAN event they've hosted in 2023 was the smash bros tournament, which was moved to a different location for unknown reasons (most likely to do with energy prices in germany sky-rocketing).

for what its worth, the very first talks about the first rcadia tournament started in april of last year, but now they know the drill they could put together a lan much quicker, so if they get their shit together i see no reason for there to not be a lan later in the year. last i heard they were pretty happy with the overall turnout and attendance from the previous one, so who knows

i'd imagine that maybe the NEC have upped their prices on renting out the spaces on such a regular busy weekend that insomnia decided it was just not worth it.

also arent there a bunch of lan centers popping up in the uk? i've only done a minimal amount of research but if we really want another UK-based lan there's probably a way to make that happen with like EPIC.LAN or someone like that

EPIC.LAN is a potential and are somewhat cheaper vs. Insomnia, especially when factoring in a PC rental. This is something we might explore for 2024.

As for other LAN centres, the only options in the UK are Belong arenas but these are a) quite small in terms of physical space and available PCs, and b) not cheap to hire out for a weekend.
We have ongoing contact with Belong already from last year to understand the finances and logistics involved. Anything done at these centres would be very much a tournament-focused event with an invite-only/online qualifier process to participate and likely a higher-than-expected ticket cost for those participating teams. This is still something we are exploring.

EDIT: SideQuest is also a thing, but the opening times on the locations are quite restrictive and almost certainly would not work out any cheaper than Belong I suspect.
