Is anyone else in the midwest having massive ping spike issues? I just spoke with my ISP over it and they told me that Centurylink (aka the fiber ring owner for most of the midwest) was having problems with their servers (aka the servers pretty much everyone in the midwest have to route through to connect).

One thing I've learned from talking to other midwestern players is that (outside of texas at least) they tend to have absolutely terrible routing to most servers. I don't know if it's because we tend to have smaller ISPs or what but it's definitely a crapshoot.

There was a long stretch where I wouldn't get less than 110 ping to Chicago from Kansas City. And my Canadian friends often ping better to Texas than I do. Just shitty routing more than anything. Not much that can be done. I've tried different service packages, including the highest tier in hopes I would get some sort of priority, but nope.

Yeah, afaik it's a problem with CenturyLink's fiber ring. Even if you don't have them as your ISP you're still going to route through them, so I guess it's just a waiting game.

I have centurylink and I get 50-70 ping to servers IN MY CITY (phoenix), yet I get the same to LA, and 70-80 to dallas.

It's a problem with their midwest ring, not the entirety of CenturyLink.

I am in Colorado and recently just switched from CenturyLink to Comcast. I was getting over 100 ping to Chicago with CenturyLink, but since I switched my ping is now back down to 30.

CenturyLink always denied that it was a problem on their end, you won't get anywhere with their technical support.

Mr_PerfectWow so this is why I get huge ping spikes?

Most likely. Run a trace route (open command prompt and type tracert <ip>) and use the IP of a server you frequent.

I'm in STL with Centurylink and have no problems, also I had Hotwire Communications a little while back and they were pretty decent too, and when I say decent I mean 70 up and down and pinged 10 to chi and around 30 to dallas.

Off topic, but - just moved into portland, got centurylink, its awful. 80 ping to servers within portland, 130 to chicago, 120 to dallas, etc. Speeds are 1/10th of what we're paying for. Going to have to cancel and go with comcast.

I am in Indiana, I was having this problem maybe 2 weeks ago (bad ping, disconnects, shit download/upload) but it eventually solved itself after a few days.

Central Indiana here, and I've been getting random disconnects recently. I just had one and when my internet came back up, it was extremely slow.

I'll randomly lose connect to the internet (router goes red and modem loses connection), for about a minute or two, then it kicks back on. =[ Same state, comcast =[

depends on the server location

Chicago is still just fine for me, while LA is going crazy from anywhere from 90 to 230 at random intervals for no reason. Texas is kinda the same as LA but it's only 60-90 which isn't a big deal to me. [redacted]
