It really is my OWN stupidity for not reading the fine print, I do have an excuse however..
Early last season tic and cringe couldn't pay for their premiums for esea minutes before the match. So I shelled out the money and put them both on my debit card and did it as fast as possible because we had a game to play. I didn't read the fine print in the user agreement that says "It will be automatically renewed". Now I could understand being automatically renewed for myself, but when paying for OTHER players? It just baffled me and made me angry. I paid 4 months of premium for both of them while they wondered why they weren't losing their access without paying. I finally realized it after getting text messages on my phone once any transaction is done.
So for anyone who is a nice guy and helps people pay league fees etc. with their debit/credit cards.. Be aware that you're automatically going to get billed unless you manually cancel the subscription through paypal. I never knew that, some people did, I guess i'm retarded but I got burned on it. Of course no refunds or free premium codes, nothing. I know it's my fault but I kindly suggested to the support guy to make a disclaimer larger telling people even when paying for others it will automatically renew. It only ended up being about $70 but it's still frustrating.
END RANT.
Be careful out there kids

Hasn't it always been like this?
I was made aware of this after my first season of playing. Dad asked about a charge that shouldn't have been made, and I went back and read through the print.

I know i'm half retarded but i'm absolutely sure others have run into this issue before. I wanted to make others aware though to prevent it from happening again in the future to anyone else.

Or could it be that i'm really not the guy you assume I am? You don't know me at all. Thanks for the attention though. I honestly could care less what people like you think of me. Point of this thread was to let others know who didn't know how this worked, especially the newer players.

This is a pretty common practice, not just ESEA. It is obviously a cash grab but it's not really shady or anything. When you pay for premium you are "subscribing" to ESEA, and like all subscriptions it auto-renews.

It just caught me off guard because I had to do it in a rush initially prior to the match, and in the past i've done it just off paypal funds from past winnings. Like I could understand putting my account on automatic renewal but when paying for others I don't think that should be the case. And if that's their intentions they should make it clear when paying for others that it will be automatically subscribed to my billing even though it's not even for myself.

Yeah I know we need more relevent threads which help the community like "Should I take methamphetamines while playing TF2?" or "Blase pls".
Yes i've been posting a bit more than normal but it probably seems like more because I don't usually post much unless it's something I need help with or something that can help others. Not trolly amusement which is 3/4 of the forum.

You are willfully paying for someones subscription, why wouldn't it auto-renew to your debit card? They don't emphasize it because it is an easy way to make money, but that is no different than any other service that offers subscriptions. Welcome to the real world.

HippoESEA made me auto renew off of a FREE premium code. I didn't even realize I was paying it for two months.
This is just bullshit. It's frustrating. When you click the button it says "Pay for 1 month of premium" not "Subscribe to automatic payments month to month". It throws in the automatic payments on the bottom of the page in smaller letters of course. Or when paying for another player it comes up in a gigantic pop-up wall of text that would take you an hour to read through. When you're rushing to get players signed up to get into the server you don't really have the time to read the fine print.

Yeah this is true, it was my fault for not reading the fine print but I stated why I didn't. Now I know and it'll never happen again and hopefully more people will know now so they don't get burned as well.
When ya coming back to play ehfk?!

I had to go back in and cancel each subscription individually, but it was kind of hidden. It doesn't say ESEA Subscription it was more like S-23910829813109

Yeah I thought of you specifically pt, so now we know how/why lol. Some poor guy who did you a favor has been paying 7$ a month for years for you without knowing.

Well, it caught me off-guard and I ended up paying for three extra months of premium. I wouldn't be particularily upset about it if it wasn't for the fact that the last season was terrible and ESEA pretty much fucked us over in every way possible. Being an ESEA virgin, I genuinely thought I was paying for three months of premium, not a subscription that is renewed every three months. I guess it's my fault for not reading the fine print but then again I seldom encounter companies that try to get few extra dollars by trying to trick the customer, sounds like that would give you bad reputation. So I guess this is an American business thing or that ESEA doesn't really care about their reputation.

Pays to be aware of every transaction you make, not noticing it for 4 months is pretty bad, you never know when you're going to be a victim of fraud, if you wait 4 months in that instance it may already be too late.
But yeah ESEA are money grabbing fucks, no matter how good that league is for TF2 I am not giving them another penny.

how the fuck can you be upset at a business for wanting money
if people don't check their paypal regularly and don't notice it it's their fault
i think it's even marked as a subscribtion when you pay the first time

Of course no refunds or free premium codes, nothing
Maybe because the people you paid for should pay you back? They wont give you refunds or something otherwise they would have free premium...

amazon prime does the same thing. i think it's a fairly standard practice, and yet another reason that you need to be paying attention to the details when making subscription purchases online.

I only realised it was a subscription when I looked at my paypal account, and I ending up paying for an extra month. A couple of people from my team are still subscribed as well. Looking at the payment page it's kind of clear that it is a subscription, but when you're in a rush and it's separated into 'one month' and 'three months' it's easy to assume it's a one off payment. Maybe there should be an option to be invoiced monthly, or at least it could be worded differently.
Amazon prime is the worst for this. I signed up for the free trial for a few months without realising it would then charge my card for a year's subscription at the end of it. If you don't want to get your fingers burned, it's probably safe to assume this sort of thing is going to happen when it's a subscription based service and the company has your payment details. But yeah, a reminder email from ESEA at the end of the season would be nice.
