the left sidebar does exactly this

I only used the homepage of natf2, I liked how it aggregated the recent topics under each sub section, but this topics page think posted is cool, too.
If you're against doing that, maybe extending the latest threads (from 10) on the left sidebar could work as well.

how about a compromise? TL lists new topics in fixed categories so it's not as bad to scan for activity since the categories are always in the same place

Ah I see that left sidebar now. Nice.
I guess what I like about the full page is how it's all mixed together (that is to say the categories are all mixed together) yet at the same time the specific category, plus frags, views, and names of the most recent posters are visible. It seems to make finding fresh threads so simple.
I would compromise with the example you shared though. :)
