Unrelated but does windows 10 give better fps than 7 or 8? I haven't bothered to upgrade (or rather reinstall to avoid bugs and whatnot) from 8.1 but may do so if there are real performance boosts.

I don't think so, no. There are a few threads about it, it runs about the same for most people. One thing some people said here is that in Windows 10 you'll have to run in fullscreen or else there's some additional input lag.

I had 8.1 and went from ~93 fps on benchmark down to 70 on Win10, but then I changed dx from 90 to 95 and went up to ~110. I never bothered testing 95 or 98 on 8.1 so I'm not sure if this was Win10 or not. I'm pretty sure CSGO seems to run better now though and that's locked on dx95 (never did any benchmarking though).

If it's free to upgrade I would say do it. You can always revert.

it doesn't mess with steam, the only problem windows 10 has is the forced vsync it has and if you use an old integrated graphics card, it doesn't let you remove the black bars from a non-native ratio. The forced vsync only exists if the game is run in windowed mode and there's no known way to disable it on windows 10 (assuming that ending dwm,exe doesn't disable vsync).

You can just remove the xbox app

Open an elevated(Admin) powershell

Put the following

Get-AppxPackage *xboxapp* | Remove-AppxPackage

this has nothing to do with vsync being forced.

it's a part of dwm and it's essential to how dwm works - you can't get rid of it without getting rid of dwm (which is what Win7 + basic/classic does).

that said win10 shouldn't irritate anyone more than win8 did, because win8 forced dwm as well. in fact WDDM 2.0, which comes with win10, does fix a lot of the input lag issues without vastly changing how dwm works. also the anniversary update should fully address all of the issues that WDDM/dwm had in the past regarding bad max framerates with multiple displays with mismatched framerates (which i've detailed and dug into in a couple of posts here on TFTV).

Is this update a go ahead then? I ended up not doing it all because of that "it fucks up Steam" outburst my friend had, couldn't actually tell me what it fucked up so he was probably just talking out his ass.

About the question if win10 gives better FPS than win7:
I recently upgraded to win10 (with the anniversary update) from win7 and my FPS with the benchmark stayed pretty much exactly the same.
Same result with a clean install of win10.
So win10 with anniversary update might give you better FPS than win10 without the update, but not better FPS than win7.
At least that was the case for my PC.
