What sort of downsides are there to using OpenGL emulation instead of DirectX 8/9 on Windows?

It seems to give me a pretty big FPS boost, along with tabbing in and out of TF2 becoming instantaneous (with DX8/9 it takes anywhere from 2-4 seconds depending on my resolution) and far less crashes.

that post is about -gl, not -r_emulate_gl. I can't find an exact date for when the new launch option was added to windows but the dates on google search results (including Valve's own developer wiki -- added to it on 11/11/2018) lead me to believe it was only implemented some time last year or the year before see below

It still uses DirectX, it just sets DirectX to use the same reduced feature level as OpenGL.

I didn't know this was a thing. I am also curious of the downsides if it nets an fps boost.

Also, to respond to your edit, that wiki edit is straight from the mastercomfig wiki.

I have no reason to believe this launch option hasn't been in the game for a long while

Yeah you're right, after searching for a while I finally came across this /r/tf2 post from 2013, so it's been around much longer than I thought. My mistake. Just wanted to get the point across that it isn't the same "snake oil" launch option from the linked thread.
