TurbomonkeyRemember when all of ETF2L used a plugin and got their screens secretly recorded taking a screenshot every few mins.

I’m just now remembering how illegal this was.

Do you mean ESL and their Aequitas / Wire anticheat? I don't think you can force client-side screenshots with just a server-side TF2 plugin.

He's talking about this. Afaik it only took a screen of your TF2 & whatever a cheating client would show in the game if one was injected, not anything else on your PC. It caught out a lot of people playing on any servers running the plugin using wallhack etc. like https://imgur.com/B9UjE or https://imgur.com/CrJOb.
Valve patched out the method at some point according to AnAkkk, likely due to the privacy concerns.

Was the ESL anti cheat similar to the ESEA client? I just remember there being a controversy where it was found that it was mining bitcoins on users PCs?

ETF2L never enforced Anakin's plugin I don't think? They were actually at odds with Anakin and had a huge history of disagreement since his time with ESL etc, but some servers chose to run it and ETF2L had to make decisions whether they would use the data the plugin obtained (they did).
