just got into the card game again with some irl friends and i was wondering if anyone in the tf2 community played. Also, i was wondering if there was any way to play online with buying the official game.
I found a bunch of cards I had in my closet this week, and I wanted to start playing.
Started playing again myself a few months ago, and standard is really sweet right now even if it's fucking pricey to build a decent deck. I have a couple hardcore friends that do the big tourney thing who help me out with some cards and ideas, otherwise I would be lost.
Don't think there's a way to play online for free these days, but you can apparently play your way into magic online without investing too much if you're decent, and willing to spend the time.

I would... but people here are okayish players, and NO ONE HERE KNOWS HOW TO TEACH ;-;
Started playing with alpha cards when I was about 13ish and stopped playing a little after 5th generation came out because my fucking stepfather threw out all my cards when I got a "D" on my report card.
16 years later, I still get pissed about how much I could have sold those cards for since about 50% were first and second gen.

My Myr deck is the best.

I played for about a year and half. I stopped playing standard when I got into tf2 and when the rest of innistrad block was entirely delver decks and R/G ramp. I'd definitely be up for playing modern or standard on Cockatrice with some tf2 dudes.
EDIT: Since Cockatrice is getting sued, this is where you play: home.hovertac.com

I play 60 card formats casually. I have a Naya RWG deck, a 40-card 3 turn burn deck, and an elf grenade deck. It's fun!
I also draft occasionally with friends at school. Thinking about getting into EDH.

Cockatrice is still up but you have to use a different host/server which has around the same amount of people playing as the original anyway.
It's pretty much the only way I play magic because everything else is so expensive

wfb taught me like 2 weeks ago and now i just throw invisible stalkers everywhere like a dick and it owns
I've won my fair share of FNMs in my day. Don't play much now though.

Kids these days... The reason I'm loving standard so much is you get to actually play the game rather than find broken shit like in modern/legacy. Deck building is fun with power cards, but the games themselves suffer imo.

I used to play a bunch in middle school and a bit into highschool. I watch videos on channelfireball.com pretty much nightly to keep up with the sets. It's a very fun game, but it's so damn expensive and the community is very very very odd to say the least I couldn't keep playing.
Here's one of three boxes of cards my brothers and I shared, they're all mine now HEH:

The most expensive card I own is a Jace, the Mind Sculptor. Fuckin' A I miss this game.

zigzterOh I forgot about this one:

Rampage only cares about creatures beyond the first. This makes it a 6/7 if blocked.
Also all the cards that people are saying are really good are actually trash (save the reanimate combo, but seriously, just EoT the entomb and then chain into animate next turn).
I know how to play at a somewhat high level. I've personally played pros and done well.
For the record, right now all actual formats except legacy and vintage are absolute trash because all matchups revolve around 1-3 cards. Legacy and vintage have ridiculous cost issues. Limited is boring as fuck.
But hey, I'll play legacy, vintage, or casual over cockatrice. Add me if you care. I'll also help you with rules questions or help you get better.

I dunno mage... I hear that grumbling about standard being trash, and yet the meta has changed a TON since gatecrash released, and it seems like every couple weeks a new deck is 'strongest' because people learn how to play around the previous one.
The pros seem to be complaining because they don't know what the fuck to play, which means it's a solid format. Look at the winning decks from the past few months, and the change along with reliance on more than '3 cards' is pretty obvious.

I just got back from FNM :3
I love magic, playing bant midranged in standard right now. My FNM is like 50% amazing players playing T1 decks so I usually get to play in a pretty competitive atmosphere, its awesome. Modern is okay, but it's just the same shit. Birthing Pod, eggs decks, etc. Forget about playing control.
Legacy is a pile of expensive shit, I hope it dies out.
If you use cockatrice to play online, use the woogerworks server.

Also, standard is great (there's like 8 T1 archetypes right now, and its always changing) plus it isn't too expensive. I paid maybe $350 for cards total but I'll never have to buy them again. Not only have I just been able to trade for everything, I've pretty much won the whole value of the deck back in cards. Standard is totes worth the investment, and if you're worried about losing just play naya blitz or jund or something.

I honestly wouldn't even know how to play with all the new crap that I see. I mean there was tons of OP things back then like, Red fireball, fork, tap and greens getting 20 creatures on the board in 5 turns but

Hey, you can also play MTG with Magic Workstation or LackeyCCG.

http://www.mwsgames.com/ - simple steps to downloading MWS and installing it
http://www.lackeyccg.com/ - the other program, it downloads card images as you view them, which is nice

The biggest issue with this argument is that it assumes diversity and innovation make a good format. All the skill in the non-eternal formats is "how can I make the card(s) that completely f*ck my opponent over get into and stay in play the longest"? That's the issue when R&D makes playable "oh look, the game is over" cards. R&D wants diversity, innovation in decks, and a changing meta. However, the game itself is no longer interesting.
Look at, say, CounterTop Goyf mirrors from 2007. Most importantly, every card is relevant. There are constant changes in who's winning. Misplays will often cost you greatly. Each player has many viable options, many of which involve interaction with the opponent. There are tons of tricks to do with your cards that reward experience. You are almost assured an actual game. That is the pinnacle of the game. Ever since creatures became way too good, the game has gotten progressively worse.

WTF, why would they make a card that gives (esp instant) with 5/5 with trample that only costs 4 mana?

Yeah, I play competitive standard at the StarCity events. (All work schedule allows for right now.) Preparing for DGM prerelease with a bunch of proxy decks of the cards as they are spoiled.
It's funny how it works, I get into it once every 3 years and I get SUPER competitive with it. I literally build my standard deck on MTGO as well (very dumb idea money wise) and just grind, grind and grind to prepare for tournaments.
Finished decently at the last huge open in DC, Junk reanimator is still imba. (I run boros aggro, not red deck wins ez mode barely-boros shit either.. but predominantly white) Good god I CANNOT wait for thragtusk and resto angel to rotate out. I literally cannot wait. :O I REFUSE TO PLAY MIDRANGE. T_T
Also, MODERN MASTERS is going to be AMAZING. :D
No more 150 dollar goyfs! I've always played standard but have been itching to give modern and legacy (gasp) a shot. I work in graphics so it's nice being able to have the SCGLIVE streams up every weekend just in the background if anything.
I'm literally refreshing spoiler sites every night at midnight:
