4Toast look to ascend Prem

With ETF2L Season 39 on the horizon, 4Toast, a spiritual next iteration of Ascent.EU, look to add yet another title to their legacy. 4Toast's core has never lost an ETF2L season while sporting the Ascent branding and will be looking to find the same success under a new banner.

papi (also known as MikAZN) and LUKASTANK have been playing on and off together since Season 32, and were joined by toemas_ only a season after. Under the orgs SVIFT and Faint Gaming, the LUKAZN duo earned two 3rd place finishes in ETF2L and yet another two at Copenhagen Games 2019 and Insomnia65, with toemas_ joining them for half of those achievements. As is customary, the European scene experienced a shakeup following Insomnia, which this time involved the departure of many top talents who previously dominated the game. After this exodus of stars, papi and co - the newly signed Ascent.EU - were expected to take the top spot in Europe... And take it they did.

There was perhaps no one better to be the central component of a new Premiership dynasty than papi - who went from being a prodigy who played Prem in his fourth season to a tremendous Pocket Soldier who was praised by kaidus as being one of the only natural leaders in the scene. papi wasn’t the only fast riser in this squad, however, as toemas_ also had a rather swift rise through divisions and an even quicker rise from a position of just about having his feet through the door of top tier play to being one of the best Pocket Scouts in Europe under papi’s leadership. Similarly, this core saw LUKASTANK’s aggressive playstyle and inhuman ability to land projectiles take him from being a lesser-known name to being hailed as the greatest Demoman Europe had seen in years and crowned MVP at Copenhagen Games 2019 as well as Season 33, and later Seasons 34 and 35.

With such a stacked core, it was no surprise when the team swept their way to their first Premiership title in Season 34 to end the year before earning yet another in Season 35 to begin 2020. What made Season 35 different however was the introduction of their new Medic and Scout. Domo and credu had previously played with a different Ascent.EU iteration under the leadership of amppis and had shown brilliance and consistency in Prem already, but had never been able to win without playing with the goliaths that were Se7en. Joining the new-age edition of Ascent was their chance to be frontrunners in the power shift that was occurring at the top of European TF2 following the departure of Se7en. credu had been stunning the scene for a while with his mechanical skill, playmaking and sniper play; while Domo had been known as a promising and capable Demoman player who had managed to fit in well with the best when given the opportunity. Both would have to face new challenges coming into the Ascent squad - playing under a new leader and with new teammates while Domo would also have to take on the task of picking up a new role. They would prevail, however, with credu getting a victorious last hurrah ETF2L title as well as victory in the Lockdown Throwdown tournament before taking a break, and Domo also being praised by papi as “the best aggressive Medic” after the Season 35 final.

Most of the squad chose to take a break during Season 36, though toemas_ and Domo would attempt to carry on in the Ascent name without the core - and found a disappointing lack of success. A player who did find success, however - albeit mostly on an individual level - was Néo. The French Scout shook the division with his death-matching excellence, producing frag clip after frag clip. Though his team would only finish 4th, the individual carry power he showed made it a breakout season for him.

papi would return to form a new Ascent roster near the end of 2020’s Summer. Though they suffered a disappointing 3-0 defeat to Season 36’s champions nerdRage in the final of the second Lockdown Throwdown tournament, they bounced back for Season 37 after a couple of roster changes and dominated the season to take another title, as well as taking 1st place in the DreamHack Community Clash to end 2020 as champions once again.

Though papi, toemas_, Domo and LUKAS started off 2021 by winning the GGtoor Locked (down) and Loaded tournament (with papi and toemas_ winning the second one as well), they ultimately ended up stepping back from competition once again and allowing their runner-ups from Season 37 - the newly signed nerdRage that was previously SVIFT - to take the top spot. In the absence of Ascent, nerdRage were able to win both Season 38 and the second DreamHack Community Clash.

Now, Ascent comes together once again to reclaim their throne under a new identity - 4Toast - with papi at the helm, and LUKAS and toemas_ forever at his side. This time, however, toemas_ is making the jump to a new role. Having tried Roamer before in the GGtoor Locked (down) and Loaded tournament, the seasoned Pocket Scout is now officially expanding his role kingdom for the chance to earn ETF2L titles on multiple roles. Joining them on Medic once again is Domo, and credu returns from his hiatus to look to prove he’s still got it. He’ll be joined on Scout by Néo, who has proven himself already to be more than capable of going up against the best.

4Toast made their debut in the DreamHack Community Clash 2021, but were unable to breach the top 3. With previous ETF2L podium finishers nerdRage and FAINT both going into inactivity for at least this season, though, and with practice under their belts, papi and pals should be more than capable of contending for the title heading into ETF2L Season 39.

4Toast leader papi shared with us some insight on the team and thoughts about the upcoming season:

We started playing 2 weeks before [DreamHack Community Clash EU 2021], toemas wanted to play prem on soldier so we are doing it. We picked up neo as we needed a scout and instantly fell in love with the French dude !!! Domo plays medic as he is a low skill cuck. [toemas_ has] played scout for many seasons at top prem and wanted a new challenge. After playing the mix cup [GGtoor Locked (down) and Loaded] that we won with him on roamer he really liked it, but then we played the next cup [GGtoor Locked (down) and Loaded #2] with him on scout with the Frenchies, and he decided it wasn’t that fun so he wanted to roam.

We will try to win the season, that is our goal. condawg’s team [nunya] looks really good, they’re new players who are keen. You can [also] never write Eemes [Ora Elektro] off.

No plans for after the season.

4Toast’s intentions are clear: they want to win. They will be looking to achieve this with:

thanks for the positive words guys, this is my preferred way of writing in general though not everyone in the team agrees with it for roster articles. i think this article maybe has some issues with chunky sentences but overall I prefer to write more detailed story-driven articles so I'm glad its been received positively (ofc more feedback is welcome whether its positive or not)
edit: wanna add that since I joined tftv at beginning of 2020 my goal was always to create more narrative-based content and avoid boring "here is roster they come from these places they've done this k cool bye" articles where possible. i do think brief roster breakdowns have their place but this is personally what I prefer to write, which is even reflected in the sample article I used to apply - a very, very long Se7en story piece. i haven't really achieved these goals and I don't have much energy for writing these days but I do hope to do more detailed story-driven content in the future which to me is more interesting.

shouldn't be an issue since I don't think other writers will follow this style and if I do the next one for this core (assuming they still together) I'll keep this in mind.
