flyingbuddyMy guy actually made a Reddit post to try get people to validate his opinion lmao

https://www.reddit.com/r/grammar/comments/pjtclf/can_misconflate_be_considered_a_compound_word/

That post was not for confirmation bias; I just wanted more input answers from other people, because asking in one forum just feels like not enough input answers.

(Also it'd be great if you could get rid of the AMP link.)

I mean you're not wrong. I spend a lot of time on my shitty laptop.

Goddamnit, those grammar guys are clearly knowledgeable, were so much nicer than us and carefully explained things to you and you still said "no ur wrong" to try to win an argument on a video game forum lmao

Well hey I didn't give a shit if misconflate was a real word prior to that argument starting up. Also there's no reason to care anyway; I carried the meaning through to you whether through the explicit word 'misconflate' or the implied definition in 'conflate'.

I wonder if these forum posts happen after AimIsADick spews some shit in a pub server and ends up in a pointless argument.

reddit dude“Misconflate” is not a word—but it could become one if enough people use it. As it stands, it certainly is strange.AimIsADick's DickHeaded ReplyDo a group of letters only become a word when enough people use it? I thought the criteria for a group of letters to be recognized as a word is to be given definition.reddit dudeBut maybe you’re just a very creative person. ;)AimIsADick aka DickHeadWell with how prefixes work in English, I just thought I could apply prefixes to any word.

just take an online class in linguistics for fucks sake we are all losing braincells (pro tip: how do u think definitions get made? some all knowing human oracle snaps his finger and the word appears in merriam-webster? fuck no dude, language is constantly changing and new words are added based on common usage, even someone who knows nothing about linguistics knows this just based off common sense alone, maybe if u werent constantly crafting up new shitposts u could sit back and think about some of the stuff u say and realize how quickly it falls apart under even minimal scrutiny)

for someone who said in other threads that college is useless and a scam you really do perfectly prove the point that college is actually useful to educate ignorant morons like you who think they know what they're talking about and constantly talk out of their asses

edit: to reiterate, the reason ppl hate on u here is not that you are dumb, it is that you are so defensive and argumentative and refuse to admit that maybe you don't know what you're talking about. put the ego aside and stop posting like a pretentious prick and people will be fine with u asking questions even if they are a bit silly (look at rahmed he posted way too many silly threads and questions but wasnt an asshole about it so it wasn't a big deal)

bearodactyljust take an online class in linguistics for fucks sake we are all losing braincells
  1. Online classes usually cost money. A resource I don't have.
  2. College resources are usually online these days.
  3. There are linguistic communities online that can help with the field.
bearodactyl(pro tip: how do u think definitions get made? some all knowing human oracle snaps his finger and the word appears in merriam-webster?

No. That's not how words are standardized (there is no universal definition of a word; the definition of 'word' is based on [1][2]).

bearodactyllanguage is constantly changing and new words are added based on common usage, even someone who knows nothing about linguistics knows this just based off common sense alone,

You can't rely on common sense period. Statements deemed to be "common sense" (more accurately the majority's opinion) can be and often are wrong ([1]); in fact it is logically fallacious. For instance:

  • It is "common sense" to put your phone in rice after it gets wet, since rice helps dry your phone. This is not true! [1][2], as this sort of thinking comes from confirmation bias.
  • "People use 10% of their brain." This is a classic "common sense" myth though many more people recognize this is false. [1][2][3][4]
bearodactylmaybe if u werent constantly crafting up new shitposts u could sit back and think about some of the stuff u say and realize how quickly it falls apart under even minimal scrutiny)

I do sit back and think.

bearodactylfor someone who said in other threads that college is useless and a scam you really do perfectly prove the point that college is actually useful to educate ignorant morons like you who think they know what they're talking about and constantly talk out of their asses

How so?

I'll admit it was a mistake to state colleges were useless; they helped us get tons of information over 2 millennia that we would not have been able to get. However I feel that college is just too risky for me in a world where employment isn't guaranteed and the home rental market is getting more expensive.

bearodactyledit: to reiterate, the reason ppl hate on u here is not that you are dumb, it is that you are so defensive and argumentative and refuse to admit that maybe you don't know what you're talking about

I already admitted that I don't know shit about linguistics. What do you mean I "refuse to admit [my lack of knowledge]"?

AimIsADickWhile I have no credibility on this topic, since I have not studied english at a high level, I can say the same thing to you and everyone in this thread, because I have not seen any proof that y'all are credible on the topic of english.bearodactylput the ego aside and stop posting like a pretentious prick

Ok.

bearodactyland people will be fine with u asking questions even if they are a bit silly (look at rahmed he posted way too many silly threads and questions but wasnt an asshole about it so it wasn't a big deal)

How is one defined as an "asshole" or "pretentious"? I'm not trying to be a dick here; I just need to know when someone is considered an asshole so that I can reduce that feeling I'm radiating.

It'd also be great if people would stop jumping to conclusions and stop assuming shit that is impossible to verify.

Skemethe fact that this dude isn't banned yet is a sadistic prank by the tftv admins since most of u dont seem to realize you are replying to a troll

Not trolling but ok.

It seems that way in this case, but this discussion got derailed the instant I said the word misconflate at no fault of my own. I rarely intend to piss off people.
