if you are in cali hmu

If you can get a really cheap gym pass for showers, get as many government benefits as you can and look for what free items/food you can get from local charities

there is zero shame in begging every friend you have (internet or irl) to let you sleep on their couch, even if they're geographically far away cross country bus tickets are cheaper than being homeless.

If you're enrolled at any college or have a car that opens up options too.

Echoing that psych ward is better than being homeless, if you're trying to get committed usually (this was true at the place I volunteered, probably varies a ton) the criteria used is "plan + means + have a specific timeframe they will carry it out on". This should be last resort though.

Most important tip I have is gather as many documents you can about yourself before being kicked out, ID, SSN card, insurance card (if you have any), etc.

Look around for homeless shelters and food pantries. While they may not be great they are still an option to at least use until you can figure something else out.

buy a tent and camping gear and hide from the other homeless people. look for one of the furthest stops on transit you can in your nearest metro and find a safe place to stay.

cook with butane/propane. buy cheap food, work, get a gym membership for your showers

you're gonna want wet wipes and a 5 gallon bucket

godspeed

Libraries are your best friend! If you're young, you probably pass as a student OR prospective student. And many Libraries are 24 hours (though I don't know during COVID). If you're near a university, you can ask for a guest pass to their library. You can be charismatic and say that you're considering studying there (most libraries are chill about this anyway).

If its like 2 am, just lay out some books on your table and pass out in your chair on the 5th floor. There's a low chance a security guard will come and wake you up.

If you're in an area with restaurants / bars, you can keep watch from a distance of people dining outside. This is so easy to pull off at cafes because the service is usually very slow and if people leave a bit of a pastry and coffee when they leave, you can absolutely just sit down casually and finish it. Most people mind their own business and if you act natural, nothing will go wrong.

Honestly if you can figure out a job (doesn’t sound like you have one), if it’s a mom and pop shop, and you explain your situation they might help. I’ve been in between renting apartments and started some new dishwasher gig at a local restaurant, I was just going to sleep in my car, but my boss offered to let me sleep on the couch they had in the back.

If you can actually just secure something reasonable, working is your best bet. One it will take up the majority of your day, less likely to get on trouble, if it’s a restaurant you’ll have access to shift meals, water / drink and a bathroom. Co-workers might even offer you a spot to crash over the night.

You can work like a week (or two depending on the pay cycle) and get a week to week lease at a room rental (100-200 a week). It’s not going to be cake walk, it’s more about being determined and wanting to get out of this more then anything, but it’s more then doable.

Go to a labor finders temp agency you will find all kinds of jobs, do anything you can to make some money. I don't know how you got yourself into this situation but there is always work out there. Maybe find something that can pay you cash that might help. Hit up any family members where ever they live you gotta have some family somewhere, ask them to fly you out there if they are far, and tell them you will pay them back.

The gym idea is good a good one but you need a little bit of cash flow to keep that going.

https://www.coolworks.com/jobs-by/national-park/ a lot of national parks have seasonal jobs with room and board + pay if you already have some money saved up to travel there. If you dont have any family/friends support or cant find a job in your area its not a bad option. Id try yellowstone if all else failed.
