Basically I'm fed up with getting 30 fps at mids, so I'm looking looking to build a new desktop with a 550$ budget. I'm mainly gonna be playing tf2 on it, and want to spend more on the processor.

I'm kind of concerned though that the i3 won't have enough juice to run this game at ~240 frames with highframes and no streaming. Does anyone know if it can? Also please critique the build, it may not be perfect.

My 4170, which is around the performance of an i3 2100, can pull like 200+ with ease on highframes.

If you're worried about streaming, you can bump down the price of your Mobo and go for a lower i5

The i3 will probably give you decent performance but if you want to never drop below 60 then you might want something better. i5-3570K ideally but that might not be possible with a 550 dollar build. Why do you want 240 fps anyway?

An FX-4170? Not around the same performance. It has double the amount of cores which is hugely significant for tf2. An i3 won't pull +200 frames

Because it's the refresh rate x2 of a 120hz monitor, and I'd want to use the 120hz monitor to its fullest extent. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong though.
I also modified the build a bit to include the FX-4170 and it actually came out cheaper. I used a motherboard that came with an FX-8320 in a different build I saw, so there shouldn't be any compatibility issues. http://pcpartpicker.com/p/SOSw

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/SP2U, runs a 4300 instead and has an actual upgrade path since 1155 is going to be a dead socket after haswell. psu is modular as well and has 8 gigs of ram for about $20 more total

No but you might want to try for a 6300. Also if you want to run 1080p on your monitor you might want to get a 2gb edition of the 650. I'm gonna edit the build a bit tell me if you like it.

Lol 1155 socket is not gonna die because of haswell. Haswell will have basically the same performance as the 1155 socket cpus. It's just gonna be more efficient and cooler.

If he has the extra 10$, he should up the 4170 to a 6300, more cores, better architecture

Not exactly sure what you're asking. 1155 socket is for intel cpus and am3+ is for AMD cpus. Use the one I put in pcpartpicker.
