so i dont know if anyone else here has a youtube channel but i keep getting a message telling me that soon ill be forced to upgrade to the new layout. has anyone done this already and what is the process like.
i just make videos and shoutcast for fun and upload them, i dont promote my channel or really dream to grow something big and its just a hobby i do on the side so the concept of having to make a trailer for my channel and what not just seems like a unescessary annoyances, seeing that im to lazy to puts tags and everything on my videos as it is.

the whole "name change" thing seems really ridiculous.

It's pretty straight forward. You'll just need a new header image, and choose a video for your front-page non-subscriber view 'trailer'.
However, it did force me to create a new Google+ account for my channel, which I thought was dumb.

I was given one of these warning messages about update my channel as well. I simply used the channel trailer the same way as having a video featured on the channel as before worked. Instead of a background you are using a banner now, so bare that in mind when deciding the image.

huh ok the new account thing did u already have a google account and it made u make another or what because i really want to change my account name from my actual name to my steam name seeing as i post all tf2 videos and the fact that one of my fans/subs spent an afternoon hunting me down and finding me on facebook, he somehow deduced that the person with a hat was me in the sea of people with the same name

Isn't much to it, just pick a banner and you have a few new options as far as layouts go.

Really the only time consuming part is messing around with your channel banner.
The size of the banner has to be pretty large to look good on all formats.
Nothing to worry about just go ahead and make the switch.
