For some reason I can't watch stv demos with `demoui.. I click load and locate the file, but tf2 doesn't seem to know what to do. I don't have this problem with demos that I record. Any suggestions?

I had a similar problem as well, but I was loading the demos by name with "playdemo DEMONAME". My issue was solved by renaming the demo to something with only letters, numbers, and underscores.

If you don't want to rename files (I'm assuming because you had spaces in them), then quotation marks should work.

ex. playdemo "file name"
