So I recently just purchased an Asus VG248QE 144hz monitor. I heard a lot of awesome things from others about the upgrade from 60hz to 120hz, so I decided to bite the bullet and upgrade from my laptop 15" screen.
Here's the problem though, I can't really notice much of a difference in-game between 60hz and 120hz. Everyone says the change is like night and day, but maybe I'm just blind?
I plugged the monitor into my laptop using dual link DVI and set it as my main display before setting the monitor to display at 144hz. My TF2 launch settings are: -full -w 1920 -h 1080 -refresh 144 -console -novid -useforcedmparms -noforcemaccel -noforcemspd -nojoy. My graphics card is a Nvidia 485m, and I tried playing TF2 at both 132 max fps and without a cap (range from 150-400 fps). I also play on 9.1 in/350 as scout.
But yeah, I honestly am not sure if it's just my eyes not noticing the difference or if I'm not actually using my monitor properly. I don't have lightboost enabled mainly because the colors on the Asus are kinda dim and brownish/pinkish already (and I don't want the colors to get worse), but people tell me the difference from 60 -> 120 should be more than enough to notice. The only thing I can notice is that on my desktop, I made a window smaller and dragged it side to side on both settings. At 60hz, the window looks a little bit more jagged when I move it than at 144hz (though maybe I'm just trying to convince myself of that). In game, the only difference I really notice is that my screen is bigger, so other players look larger for me to shoot.
If anyone has any ideas/suggestions to help me out, it'd be greatly appreciated! I just really want to make sure that I'm using the 120/144hz monitor properly. Even if I can't notice the difference consciously, I'd love to be reassured that I'm not wasting a $300 purchase unconsciously as well. Or if anyone has an Asus VG248QE, it'd be awesome if you could walk me through step by step as to how you set it up (including ICC/lightboost if you think it's worth it).

I don't really know what the exact english terms are since my windows is german here but try this:
Right click on desktop -> Resolutions
You should see your monitors with numbers on them
Right click on the asus monitor
Properties
Monitor (That's the name of the tab in german, might be Display for you?)
There you can set the Refresh rate
Let me know if it worked.
Quick Edit: -refresh 144 or -freq 144 are useless. TF2 picks up whatever refresh rate you set in windows.

its pretty easy to tell just my moving your cursor around the screen when youre on a 60hz vs 120/144
ingame should be way different, your mouse movement as well as enemy models should be night and day

Yes. I've purchased the monitor mainly for lightboost because I've used it at a friends house and it seemed to be an upgrade over normal 120hz "for my eyes". :)

I agree; if you already have a 120Hz with low input lag, don't spend the money on 144Hz. Unless perhaps you want the monitor for lightboost.

Best thing you can try doing is playing on a 120Hz for awhile then try a 60Hz. You will notice how much smoother everything was when you switch. Just move a window around in circles and you'll notice how much smoother the 120Hz is.

there is quite a difference when it comes to motion blur, but Lightboost (nividia technology) is worth upgrading for every single cent really it removes all the motion blur and its like playing on a CRT again and its amazing Lightboost > 144 > 120 > else (simply upgrading for the 144 hz might be worth it if you have a high ms monitor but otherwise not really

However, when I go into TF2, the monitor OSD doesn't show it as being in 3D mode with lightboost enabled. Is this normal or is this an indication that TF2 isn't using the proper monitor settings for some reason?

Make sure the monitor is actually running in 120 or 144hz mode.
Check your video driver control panel to make sure that it's using it. Or create a custom resolution with the correct hz settings.

do you have your other monitor still? just hook them both up at the same time and run your mouse cursor across the desktop on both of them. it will be noticable smoother on 120hz

Open the OSD menu while you're playing in game. Go to System Setup and then Information. Your actual refresh rate should be under your current resolution on the right.

120 is still amazing, if you can afford it. Lightboost isn't on AMD but there should be some equivalent soon
