why do people think that "downtime" in spectator FPSs is a bad thing
kuzaI think there should also be less "live" streams. Since pauses and live streaming comes with a few pitfalls. If they would do the cast, then cut it all together with nice camera angles, slow downs and some prep time to go over what's going to be discussed it would make for a much better production.
I really don't think this is a good idea, one of the main reasons that I watch TF2 matches is the fact that what is on the screen is happening right now and that just adds to tension of close matches. At the end of the ETF2L highlander final last season when DAROUTOUTOU had almost pushed the cart to the final point and with 16 seconds to go TviQ went huge and almost stopped the push I was going crazy to see if SNSD could actually be beaten. Because I was seeing it live it was so much more exciting, I never feel like that when I'm watching a post produced vod and I can rarely watch a full match after it has happened. The interaction with the casters in the chat also makes the games much more interesting to me.

It's really hard to avoid all spoilers to be able to be as excited about a post produced cast.
I agree that more post produced casts would be a good thing, but I do not think they should replace live casts in anyway. Perhaps eXtv could focus on post producing matches after the i46 documentary is finished. No doubt some cool features could be implemented for matches that aren't live (instant replay, post fight analysis, etc)

I'm not saying "doing it live" isn't exciting, I'm saying the level of production will skyrocket with less live streaming. In order to do live broadcasts you would need someone in a control booth constantly watching all 12+1 camera angles at once and constantly calling which camera to switch too in order to make it the way you see sports on live TV to draw in the more casual viewer.
I avoid watching live streams now because of the countless hours I've spent watching dead air, waiting for players to show up and sitting through pauses.

I thought ruwin and I handled this tonight pretty well. it was a high profile, big match between ag and mixup and I hope it came across that way
it's tougher for the ESEA-IM games, as if we do cast them then nobody knows the teams or what's happening. it's harder to paint that narrative there.
hopefully someone can step up and increase coverage for that portion of the scene though. IM has a lot of up and coming teams.

this is why cbear and djc are the greatest casters in my opinion, they spice everything up. I didn't even know what the fuck was going on when I started watching competitive tf2, but just because cbear was screaming so loud I knew something awesome was going on and I had to keep watching it
and the thing about the players background stories is completely true, it adds more to the game, it adds more to what to expect from the game as a spectator, it makes people root for vector when they win an upset match.

It also helps when you aren't playing the same map over and over and over again. Sports (and MOBA's/RTS's) don't have to deal with it since everyone plays on a standard field, but video games are different. It's pretty boring to watch Map X for the 50th time using the same strat as the majority of teams use. It's not the strats fault, it's just that we need more maps for competitive play.
I'll be honest, I've stopped watching TF2 comp because I know just about everything Team X and Team Y is going to do, and that Team X will beat Team Y unless someone chokes. When I first started watching, everything was new and it kept me interested, but now, it's just 'Oh, that team is going to win, they'll most likely do this and that etc.', I have no reason to watch or pay attention to the game I once watched/played 24/7, the game where I would jump into mumble with some broski's and watch 6's together and get hype.
When I see a new/dynamic map, it interests me because the players aren't going to always do a certain strat or will make up weird/interesting strats that I want to see the outcome off. Like pulling off the Wildcat in Handegg, you never know what will happen with that, even though it's the same formation, something is going to surprise you. We need more maps like that, a map that is almost impossible to have a set number of strats that constantly work. PL_Swiftwater is a perfect example. It's not the best map, but there is always a new way to play it. It is they most dynamic PL map that is in comp, and while it could use some work (mainly with point 3), it's always interesting. What's worse is that 6's doesn't do PL, so they have Gpit as the most 'dynamic', and even then it's either Ironman or hold B.
Comp TF2 needs more of that in general, otherwise it bores me now. The only thing that interests me these days is Plat HL and only because teams change so much, so you never really know what will happen. Also note that you are trying to pull people in that like actually playing video games, so if you aren't interesting them, they won't come ever. As much as I liked DJC's casting, he wouldn't 'save' TF2 comp scene, he would just prolong it's death.
In short, we need to find good map makers who want to make maps for comp TF2 that aren't bland and help them by playing on them and giving good feedback otherwise TF2 is just going to slowly die.
But don't get too down, I'm sure a good number of people who stopped watching are now playing in comp. It just has to have that new car smell. Just the thoughts of someone that went from watching to watching and playing to playing a little to probably quitting/quitting to make maps.
Words.

everything is boring when you're so reductive about it. soccer is boring all you do is kick a ball. living is boring all you do is breathe.

TF2 doesn't have that ability to play the same map with very similar teams because the number of strats available is very limited. Man U will not always win, neither will the Patriots etc. Real life has many factors playing into it, esports (aside from RTS's and MOBA's) does not. If it keeps going this way, you'll get less and less viewers.
I'm taking a look at this season and the only new map is metalworks. I'm not saying get rid of maps, I'm saying we need more maps that can go into the rotation that aren't bad.
How many invite teams did rarely/never seen before strats on Gpit and won this season? How many 'new' strats worked in general? You think a Football team or Handegg team does the same thing over and over again? I'm just giving my opinion from what I've observed over the years, but at least try to read my post before replying, your example was talked about in my second sentence.

We need DJC to come back so we can have the gossip that we need to be a real sport.
I've seen him in The Furry Pound quite a few times. Maybe I can nab him.
i've embraced my inner fursona. there is no coming back.

it's not about "new strats". what's entertaining is watching perfectly executed plays. but you're an hl player and cheese plays are how you win so i guess that's why you feel that way

Playing HL has nothing to do with it. This is my 4th season of HL (which I'm just having fun with) and I played 3 seasons of 6's, but I guess that makes me a HL player to you so w/e. Sure, seeing perfectly executed plays was great, but eventually it wasn't enough. It honestly might just be because I got bored of TF2, but as someone who got bored of it, maps was the first thing that popped into my mind as to why it doesn't interest me. Also new strats =/= cheese plays, it requires team effort and the ability to adapt and perfect a new strat, something most teams won't try after the first season of playing a map.

gr8stalinI don't want to see this happen because people's feelings get hurt easily enough here, imagine how PC and "gentle" everything would have to be. Every time someone made a joke at someone else's expense or unleashed the good ol' trashcan, it would be labeled as "trolling" and beds would be shit all over the globe because of one hurt feeling.
I mean it's already starting to happen now.
oh no, you might have to be nice to people for a change, what a horror
