Having lived in small-town BC and in Calgary, both with SHAW, I will say to avoid SHAW internet. Their wireless modems are total crap, and their wired internet isn't much better; both have a tendency to just shut down and kick your computer off the network for a while, and the connection is senile even at the best of times.
Going from about 10-15 ping to most anywhere in pacific north america with BCIT's residence high-speed (wireless and wired weren't much different) to my 90-800 on SHAW wireless was a bit of a shock. My friend was working for Telus for a while, and says they are currently upgrading everything to fiber, so I'd suggest trying to go with them if possible.
