About two years ago, just a few months after I first installed tf2, I was playing medic in a Badwater pub. 2c aka tehoreoz aka craig joined and started playing soldier. He told me follow him. I had never seen anyone kill so many things, and at the same time keep me from dying. At that time I thought heavy was the best class and that I should always follow heavies around. He then told me that he played "competitive" tf2 and that prompted me to go find out what that was all about.
Stumbling upon a highlander cast on twitch one day

A bunch of friends and i back from lotus a/d defend servers got together to form a ugc HL team.
I shit you not, Shintaz on the Weebl and Bob forums mentioned how he was playing for England as scout and I thought oh I'll watch that, and started investigating. Then joined the highlander community challenge with pub friends and posted a div6 recruitment thread.
Ross, or the leader of Crit-Fail Pugs. I was in the community when he started the pug group and I wasn't really intimidated because I knew most people and pretty much everyone else at the time in that group was terrible too.
I basically took the plunge into comp at the same time as Nosferatu who I met in some pub
this video made me laugh so hard and I got here from Lange's stream

I knew about comp TF2 for a long time, and was a big fan of Jeager when he still played.
I messed around in some quasi-competitive stuff for a while until Crespi found me in a pub and put me on his first team.
I have him to thank for getting me into competitive TF2.

STAR_s server had good players. Some of the guys from there explained it. Then youtube did the rest. Id say Salamancer was a big part of why I play it. He showed me atf2.org and basically showed me what HL and 6's is.
Got bored of pubs, googled competitive TF2, found ETF2L and Multiplay IRC pugs.
randomirishladWatching Sal's youtube videos.
Couple of other people have said him too, but yep, it was Sal for me. I think his accessible casts have brought in literally hundreds of players.
