so i never got around to building a server because it's expensive as fuck but i'm still looking into doing a dm/mumble server for you guys. someone in my local linux user's group is selling a server with the following specs:

- Epox AM2 SLI Motherboard (think this onel:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813123005)
- 4x1GB DDR2 800 RAM
- AMD X2 3800+ (or 4000+, hard to keep track of which processor is
which - dual core, 65watt regardless - supports hardware
virtualization for xen, kvm, etc.)
- Nvidia graphics card or some kind (probably a 7200 fanless)
- Name-brand ATX power supply (Coolermaster, I think - possibly Antec)
- PATA DVD-burner
- Western Digital Hard disk of some sort, probably 120-250GB range.

does this sound underpowered for a soapdm server and an on-demand mumble server? what do you guys think? he's saying $80-$120, should i grab it up?

I previously had a server that was a AMD Phenom II x4 840 i think it was quad core that would get dominated at around 18 slots. How many slots are you looking at? For the processor TF2 will most likely eat it alive if you are looking for host above 12 slots. The nvidia card would only be fore remote usage as servers only really look at 3 things cpu, memory, and net speed(specificly) upload. For mumble you would have 0 issues. For actual servers, may be a bit of a struggle.

This is just a benchmark and shows how unoptimized tf2 can be. The current TF.tv pub is on a i7 3770, 16 gigs ram@1333, and z68 mobo with latest firmware. While total system usage on a full server is 5% for a single thread that is up to 30%. TF2 servers are also single threaded and don't do the multi threading that well. So it will pretty much beast one core.

it's probably gonna be a 10man soapdm server, and will be hosted on plan 1:

http://www.liquidweb.com/dedicated/colocation.html

here are networking infos:

http://www.liquidweb.com/datacenter/network.html

i feel like it should be ok but i just want to make 100% sure.

For colocation, i would highly suggest looking at http://www.webhostingtalk.com/forumdisplay.php?f=45

Also the server is a rackmount or tower?

I'm not sure about the Arizona DC, i had a server in Michigan a long time ago and i ended up moving away from it. I can't remember why though. They have most likely gotten much better since then and Level 3 is a good backbone.

Heck looking at that price, you could honestly get a dedi with windows server or something within that range and possibly better specs.

there are 2 tf.tv DM servers provided by Fog currently that don't get filled too often I think

Dallas 74.91.114.228:27015
Chicago 64.74.97.61:27015

perhaps it's not such a good idea to have another DM server, but I think MGE would be fine, or another pub maybe

i'm not going with another colocation service- this colocation is free because i'm an employee at liquid web :P

but yeah, i might do a 10 man mge server, but since there are already a bunch of well-established ones (reddit, trashedgamers, etc) i feel like it's a bit of a waste. do you guys think it'd be better to just run a mumble server that can be rented out (for free) to teams who need one for scrims/matches?

the mumble idea is good, we already have enough DM/MGE servers though, what could be cool is if you get a 12 slot scrim server and give out the RCON for the community to use when they want

i'm a little worried that it would be underpowered for a 12 slot server, but i suppose once i get my hands on it i could do some stress testing with some comp teams just to see if it shits the bed. i think i'll buy it and we'll play it by ear, and see what we can accomplish with it :)

I've been up and down about mumble. There are lots of mumbles and people are kinda stuck in their ways about it. I have to visit like 3-4 different mumbles inside this community alone to join people for various things.
