Necrophagist is a flashy display of technique and nothing more. It has no artistic value.
Check out Atheist, Electrocution, Suffocation, and Capharnaum if you need a tech-death fix.
oooooh nooooo neo classical solos in death metal are soooo flassshyyy, the lead singer/guitarist is heavily influenced by yngwie and he likes to incorporate that in his style of play. how do you say 'techdeath' and mention suffocation? you sound like a 12 yearold fan boy regurgitating comments on a youtube video. suffocation is oldschool just straight raw death metal from new york. you wanna talk flashy think of shit bands like dragonforce...that is flashy as fuck. necrophagist is TALENTED. and before you think im jumping on the defensive for a band its the complete opposite, just pointing out utter stupidity and everything that is wrong with what you said. to each his own but god damn...
It's technical wankery as a whole - you can be a talented musician and show it without giving up the ability to write decent riffs. Necrophagist is like a 50:50 ratio of solos vs riffs and even that is generous assumption to how many riffs there are. How good the solos are aside, that's awful. I group together Necrophagist with bands like Psyopus and Behold the Arctopus because it's for people who enjoy the technical aspect over the music aspect.
To quote one of Necrophagist's reviews "These guys noodle more than a case of ramen."
EDIT: Atheist, Suffocation, and early Cryptopsy are old school DM bands, yes. But they're also considered Tech Death by many. Basically all Death Metal has technical elements so the definition of Tech Death is pretty ambiguous - it's just a term for more of a focus on technicality.

Atheist, Suffocation, and early Cryptopsy all featured great compositions too. Necrophagist, along with most other tech-death bands in this day and age, employ the use of simple and unimaginative song structures that act as vehicles for the solos.
The members of Necrophagist are undeniably gifted technicians, but they are not skilled composers.

I listen to all the things nobody has ever heard of.

considering ive heard of 30+ of those artists and several of them (agalloch, motw, can, pink floyd, king crimson, flying lotus, megadeth, alcest, porcupine tree, miles davis, comus, mingus) are some of my fav artists, I dispute that
To be fair lots of my internet friends have too, just my IRL friends all have bad taste
yeah, i've heard of/heard all but like 6-7 of those artists, you listen to a bunch of entry-level prog, kraut, metal, and jazz
pretty good taste though, i like can, faust, amon duul, comus, gong, and popol vuh a lot
maybe try univers zero or henry cow, looks like stuff you'd dig

I listen to a lot of less well-know artists in those subgenres too, they just have less material and fewer plays show up on last.fm. The "top artists" here end up being the things I've been listening to for longer, as well.
UZ is sick, and I love basically every band Fred Frith has played in.
Also, I'm so happy to find other zeuhl/avant/RIO types around here <3

oh, I see. I'm in the same boat, last.fm is a really poor way of showing what artists you enjoy the most so I linked my RYM as well. and yeah, Frith is basically a genius, don't really care for his solo work however

Frith's only solo album I have is Clearing, cool ambient/soundscape type stuff. Speaking of that, ever listened to Death Ambient? Magnificent band he play with.
Terrible quality picture, but here are some of my more recent purchases that I'm out of tower space for.

I buy a lot of my music online (bandcamp etc), but some things are nice to have a physical copy of. Most of my shopping is from Wayside Music, but every time I'm on their site I end up accidentally ordering way too many things.

I haven't, actually. Seems like pretty interesting music (and dark ambient has never been a genre I've explored), I'll give them a listen probably tomorrow.
