boppetkevevery time I sign in to youtube they try to get me to use my real name

what a joke
If you think about it, getting people to use their real name is a genius idea. Imagine everyone on Youtube used their real name. There would be a significantly less trolling, abhorrent racism and merciless raging: anonymity has allowed people to hide behind their PC's and verbally attack people without fear of consequences, and actual names will obviously deter that.

Companies would even be more willing to display their content on Youtube if it wasn't for the absolutely disgraceful and belligerent community that it houses. ESPN, NBC, FOX, CBS, and etc. could easily make a Youtube-based web joint where they could deliver content online, but they won't, because taking the Youtube community seriously is almost impossible.

activision tried to push the same forced-name thing with world of warcraft forums. remember the backlash on that?

having your real name out there makes it uncomfortably easy to track down your information, from phone numbers to street addresses to where you work, no matter how hard you try to hide it. comments that are protected by whatever weird name you choose makes it easier to troll, but it also means it protects you from having some nutso track you down and knock on your front door just because you said something he took issue with.

as for companies, most of them already use youtube and other social media content. it's stupid for them not to. they still hold restrictions for streaming and full content, which is arguably a downside, but that content is usually on their own websites, which generates their own traffic and ad revenue, rather than going through a third party.
