Im looking forward to this game. I was a big fan of the original DayZ, not so much the later mods unfortunately..
32hzRockets been hinting at a "messy" early alpha release "very soon" and ever since he said that the general, reddit, and forums have been a giant circle jerk begging for alpher.
Translation: we're already out of money from Arma 3.
EDIT: To be clear, BIS has a horrible track record of keeping projects on time and on budget. Each release since Arma 1 has been a scramble effort to avoid going under because they get too ambitious with what they're doing.

Yeah early DayZ was some of the most fun I've had playing any game.
It was a poorly made mod on a shitty engine/game, I'm a huge fan of ARMA too, but it was a lot of fun and hopefully the standalone brings the magic back.

Never played it despite all the hype. What do you actually do on it?
whatever you'd like. It's essentially a zombie survival simulator. You collect resources and simply try to survive. If you're the patient type and enjoy 'realistic' games then you'd probably enjoy it.
It's a zombie/survival sandbox sim placed in a decent sized region in the middle of no where in eastern europe. you basically just collect supplies and try to survive and discover the region. It aims at realism and unfiltered interactions with a large number of players on the server.
here's a cool (long) video i found

im such a dayz fanboy :) Still play the game regularly and I also like the basebuilding in Epoch :)
waiting since last december... 1 year already.. arghhh
I ended buying the ARMA series when they were on sale, but I really don't understand the game at all. I've even tried to watch a few videos and look up tips, but it all seems like BS. For example, I don't understand how people even can run away from zombies, at all. I would see tips that explains things like, it's hard for them to walk up hills, you can hide if they lose LOV, etc. I've had a single zombie run the same exact speed for, like, 5 mins. I tried to walk up hills, toss flairs, lose LOV, all to no avail.
It's because in the Mod version of DayZ. Zombies carry hardly anything and thus get really good endurance ratings.
It's far simpler to go into a building, dance around for a bit, then run out to gain breathing room.

So basically, most of the "how to" things are outdated because of mods?

It's the way Arma 2 AI works, the vanilla AI is pretty weird in terms of behavior.
While flares work for getting the attention of zombies unaware of you, if they aggro onto you your only hope is to either kill them, lose them in a building, or drive off in a car. Reason why is the AI finds you based on how "aware" they are of you, from 0-100. Anything north of 70 IIRC is really hard to shake, if they had a gun they'd be hitting you from a decent range.
Basically, DayZ does stuff that Arma's engine was never designed to handle.
