Stupid question about srcdemo/lawena recording

I've installed srcdemo for rendering demos and it works well, but I can't figure out how to make it render only part of the demo. My current workflow is just open lawena or another movie config, set the framerate and go to the tick and record and wait 30 mins for it to finish. I have to stop it at the right time though so it doesn't record the whole match and only the one part that I want.
Is there a way to save only a specific part of the demo to a smooth or something, so that it will only record that certain number of ticks and then end the movie? It'd be really helpful if there were a way to automate this or make it easier at least. Watching the game render for 30 mins gets kind of tedious.

Sorry for the long bump. Got the VDMs working, but have ran into another problem: Tf2 says it's recording audio, but the files are ending up empty when I put them into virtualdub. I am guessing this is a problem with virtualdub but who knows. Figured I wouldn't make a whole new thread. Up until a few days ago it was working fine.
I think it could be a problem lawena, srcdemo or virtualdub but possibly tf2 in general. Not sure. I keep the in game volume with the console command at the default (believe its 1, though I play at 0.05). Sometimes I turn the sound down in the windows mixer, but that shouldn't affect what it records, right?

I can include screenshots when I get home, but basically the video goes fine but the sound isn't recording. I will try listening to the .wav files separate from virtualdub as well, am guessing it won't work though
